That's the common misconception nowdays, with advancements in technology it has become more affordable to install some form of automation in the home.

Products I use for automation are controlled by UPB, which stands for Universal Powerline Bus. The data is transmitted to all devices over your existing electrical wiring, thus eliminating the cost of labour to wire existing dwellings. UPB is similar to X10, however where X-10 was only 70% reliable in delivery of signals, UPB is greater than 99% with 0.2 sec network latency.
