Talking Free Ceiling Insulation for $50.00.

    G'Day Cobbers,
    Here's a lurk.
I've had several pitches for free insulation over the past months, so decided to turn the tables on one today.
I said "you'll have to pay me for you to do it."
Without blinking an eye, he said, " OK, $50, we can start now."
Took the wind out of my sails, so I suggested he come back tomorrow.
I'll have to tell him that it's already been done.
Sheesh, looks like I missed the boat. Bugger!

There was an article in Melbournes Herald Sun about a few installers dieing from heat stroke and falling off roofs doing the free insulation installs.

The last few articles i read pointed out that many house have caught fire due to the insulation being placed too close to down lights and bathroom ceiling fans.

The last report i read, a roof caught fire, the installer put preference to getting his tools down rather than putting the fire out, he saw it burning and didnt give a rats arse about it, just looked after his own interest first.

Everywhere I go I see older cars (VN/VP commdores, EA/EB falcons) being driven by young blokes in beanies or reversed caps towing trailers full of insulation. Obviously there's a buck being made. Good on 'em - to me, gumbiment subsidies are like a rebate on your taxes, and should be utilised fully. If you're not milking, some other bastard is...

They are just the dumbos the contractor underpays and occasionally gets killed or maimed. This year I have seen numerous accidents reported in the news because they have no training. One was made to work in a roof in 42 degree heat and dropped dead , another got killed when he stapled a batt to a power cable , lots have fallen off the roof or down a ladder.

Beer4life, if the insulation was installed more than 10/15 years ago and isnt the 'R' grade now specified for your location, you may still qualify.
Some will either remove old OR will lay new over the top.
Had I known I wouldnt have got my son to remove the old insulation before they installed the new Batts.
Friend had new batts laid over old blown in Insulwool that was about 10 to 15 years old.
The rating here is R4+ in my area up on the Central Tablelands., 200 mm thick they are.
Give him the choice when he returns to decide or ask him for a $100 and you will sign the papers for the job not done.

Mate of mine had his insulation done recently and after the first rain since completion he now has buckets to collect the leakage through his ceiling. Quicker for them to push the bats through removed roof tiles than pull up through the manhole...pity they didn't put them back properly. This was through a "reputable" insulator...been around for many years.
They will be hearing from him this morning ....hopefully they will will have a Conroy swear filter installed.

I had cool or cosy door knocking a few months ago, gave me the same pitch and cost was $50 i said yep go for it, 2weeks later or so gov decided to reduce the rebate, cool or cosy rang and said we required $400 as the rebate has been cut told them NO THANKS. Friday just gone they did it for $43

My neighbour recently had free insulation installed in her roof.
She ended paying a trades man to fix her leaky roof after they botched her tiles.
Most of these installers are backyarders and their so called workmanship is as rough as guts.
If I did work like that at my job I'd be fired on the spot.
After reading about the deaths of installers in Queensland, the government should legislate to make it compulsory for installers and companies to attend a proper accredited training course on the safety of working in confined spaces, ppe training and working in proximity to electricity.
You know it might just save a life.

There also seems some variance in how much ceiling area is allowed under the rebate.
I have seen 3 areas quoted in advertising.
It goes from 100/117 to 125 square metres.
Mine was done before the rebate cut.
I had already measured my ceiling space from the OUTSIDE of the building before I even made the booking and I took the measurements to the highest figure, ie 8 M 45cm to 8m 50cm.
ok, its not much but I knew what space was to be covered and I even had a Not to Scale plan of the shape of the ceiling area.
He was taken back abit when I told him I had done the measurements and showed him my rough sketch as I have a feeling he wanted to claim my area was bigger by the way he heeemed and and hawwwed doing the maths his way so he could try to get me to pay the difference but I said by my calculations I was around the allowable limit.
He had buckleys as he could have removed it all if he had tried that on.
I have a corrogated iron roof so no hassles with leaks.

I got $150 for mine as it was my next door neighbours son that did the job - mates rates. Was going to be $400 but when they dropped the subsidy from $1600 down to $1200 so did my kickback. Still, not complaining and it has made a big difference.
