Default Eneloops in solar garden lights?

    Hi,

I have a bunch of NiMH Eneloops (or rather the Jaycar equivalent) which I use for camping (torches, radio etc). I'd like to use them in the little solar lanterns we dot around our campsite, but the lanterns came with nicads and presumably only have basic nicad charging circuitry in them.

Would they be likely to harm the eneloops, or do you think the charge rate of the cheap little solar panels would be low enough to be harmless?

    Be adventurous, don't die wondering!
    Extracted from Sanyo FAQs.

    1. Can I use a "Quick Charger" to charge an eneloop battery?
Though it is possible to charge an eneloop battery in a "Quick Charger", it is not recommended. We recommend charging eneloop batteries in a NiMh charger that is 2 hours or more. Charging eneloop batteries in a "Quick Charger" can reduce the overall life of the battery. It is strongly recommended to use eneloop, Sanyo or Sanyo NiMh battery chargers. We only warrant eneloop if used with an eneloop, Sanyo or Sanyo NiMh battery charger.
    2. Will my eneloop battery charge in any other charger other than the eneloop charger?
It is strongly recommended to use eneloop, Sanyo or Sanyo NiMh battery chargers. Most NiMh rechargeable battery chargers may be used to charge eneloop, however we only warranty eneloop if used with an eneloop, Sanyo or Sanyo NiMh battery charger.

i have a heap of garden lights, possibly similar to what you mean, they came with nicad, only 600mA,the cells life only lasted 6 months max,i have a heap of,regular
(non Eneloops) NIMH cells,2000mA,and they have been running in them no prob for about 1.5 years longer lasting, and brighter too..
and being Jaycar equivalent Eneloops, there probably the same as regular, just no label. lol
thats my say,see what everyone else says,be interesting

Thanks for the replies everyone, seems like it's worth a try.

I guess it's no huge deal either way, I just wanted to know if anyone thought it might spell a premature death for the eneloops (which I'd prefer to avoid - they cost about $5 each).

    Cheers!
