I have since discovered that a program listed in Task manageris chewing up about 50% CPU usage. It is called svchost.exe - this is what I believe is the problem but don't know what to do?
Guys, My laptop has been running slow for the last few days and have noticed that the CPU usage sits at around 50 % when I'm not even doing anything - it used to hover at 1-2% previously. Just prior to this happening, my wife was using the laptop and a serioes of virus/malware messages popped up. The security centre kept on saying that I wasn't protected and needed to download a file "pack_422". When this file was run, it then showed that I did not have any antivirus software running and went to a screen so that I can purchase some software. But I already have AVG and it is running fine (Ialso use Windows defender)
I have tried uninstalling this so called "personal security program" - I couldn't do it with windows uninstaller, but had to use another programof the net which removed it from the directory, but still appears in the bottom task bar.
I ran an avg scan yesterday and a defender scan and everything came up ok, but the laptop is still running slow with high cpu usage.
After reading others posts in this section, I have listed the Hijackthis log file for you to have a look at and tell me whats going on.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Woodstock,
tried malware, found 12 problems and fixed them, but have still got svchost.exe running at 50%. What else can I do?
After running Malwarebytes reboot and run it again and if nothing reported re-run Hijackthis and repost as some things will be changed. So the below may be gone.
First up remove siszyd32.exe from your startup folder ie C:\Documents and Settings\user\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Did you really want Personalsec? remove it
do you really want the softonic toolbar?

Try the ultimate troubleshooter it's a good program it shows what is occupying your computer and if it should be there or not.

2 more trojans were found, so now I'm running malwarebytes a 3rd time.
Once finished, I'll post again. But in the meantime, I've still got svc host running at 50%!
ok, here is my latest log.... but I've still got this svchost.exe hogging up 50% usage.

Stop being so stupid.. it’s my turn!!
ok, it looks as though I fixed the problem. After a lot of googling, I found at that svchost was/is/potentially associated with a number of other programs. Most of the internet articles pointed to a problem with audio drivers, so I right clicked on the speaker at the bottom rhs icon of the speaker and disabled it - this made the svchost drop right down.
Allis good now, except that I now have no audio output device installed!
update the audio driver might solve the problem
Thanks everyone. All problems solved, including audio problem.
