Default Windows Vista: Is it worth using

I bet theres heaps of posts on this topic, but I hope someone can take the time to help.

How well will my System Run Vista:

    AM2 Dual Core 4800+ 2.6Ghz (Brisbane Core)
    2GB DDR2 Kingston Ram
    500GB SATAII Hard Drive
    Gigabyte GA-M56S-S3 Mainboard
Asus GeForce 8600GT 512MB DDR3 (silent, but have fan attached to the heatsink now)

Now currently I am running Windows 2003 Experience Edition (Cut down version of 2003 server made to run like XP)

I can play all the current games like Crysis, Assassins Creed, Bioshock, Call of Duty 4 etc on mid - high settings at 1024x768 (Thats the highest my current monitor supports) with no performance issues and as I'm from the old Dos days ultra fancy graphics don't bother me, gameplay is what I look for.

Now would it hurt or make better my systems performance if I install Vista.

Hope someone can have some in sight.

    Thanks

should work fairly smoothly on Vista, but due to some driver issues i have found on Vista, and the general Vista-iss-ness of it, i would be inclined to wait for a newer vista release, and a good SP. just IMO.

Old motto from days gone by - "If it works, don't f*ck with it".

    Still applies.

Judging by the number of horror stories I have seen and heard about Vista, I can't understand why ANYONE would want to touch it.

XP Pro works - and it works well. It doesn't crash (much) - it is fully supported with almost every piece of software and hardware around, it's been out there for a while now so it's had a chance to be tuned, tweaked and streamlined - what more do you need?

New isn't necessarily better. [Especially in this case]

Like every version of Windows , you have to wait about a year and for a service pack before it runs correctly.

I have dual boot XP and Vista and use XP 90% of the time. I switch to Vista occasionally to get the latest downloads from Microsoft and to use it for an hour or so.

When I am happy that it works as well as XP does I will use Vista 90% of the time and XP 10%.

But that hasnt happened yet But it will happen.

    on the subject
    i dont see the point
i tried vista ages ago when it was beta
i tried it not long ago when it was better
    looks same to me.
except for the fancy interface, only thing i think is better is you can drag and drop what folders you want to the save as pop up
in xp you need a reg hack.

new pc came with vista, i was going to wipe it straight away but decided to try vista first.

just installed vista sp1, and no problems at all, either before or after. you do really need to turn off that annoying 'user accounts' feature and disable windows defender though.

running 'assisted' eset smart security, nero,1 click dvdcopypro, any dvd etc. no problems at all. even runs myob over a network no problems.

i wouldn't rush out and 'upgrade' from xp, as it is really not much different.....

its a shame, i really do like vista
but for the extras it offers, is it worth the hassle
noticed it has a better repair function from the cd, something xp lacks (i could never get R to work)

I have what I consider little knowledge on computers and I got my computer "upgraded" to vista from xp by a firm that knew as much as me. It was slow, half my progs didn't work and I had email problems from day 1. I think if you are familiar with these things it's fine, if you are a novice like me it is best to wait until service packs and the like come out. I am back to xp because vista lost me completely, but thats me

Running Vista business on a laptop.

I found the wireless setup confusing and unfriendly.

A big backward step, however a "radar" utility was entertaining.

I hate the GUI interface, it's so bloody Apple Macish.

First thing I did was select classic mode for everything.

I hate the fact that a dos box can't be maximised to full screen, shits me.

But the Vista sidebar is 'cool for kids'.

The sidebar options are exhaustive and somewhat addictive. U need a widescreen lappy to accommodate. But some of the sidebar option gobble resources bigtime.

    But sooo much memory.

HappyDad, you sound like a gamer. You might want to look up how Crysis runs under both XP and Vista. Not sure if its still the case but games were getting better frame rates under XP than Vista. I'm guessing this has something to do with the amount of resources that Vista hogs up.

Personally if it works don't screw with it because you will make it worse!

I've been hearing that a lot, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

But you're right, I would have to set everything up again.
What I've been reading, thought the 8600GT does have DirectX 10 support, its still too slow to fully use directx 10.

I have played with Vista on my old P4 2Ghz, 1GB Ram, it was slow on that, but I put it down to the age of the machine.

Sounds like, Vista isn't a good move just yet.
I was iffy about upgrading from windows 3.1 to windows 95 when it came out, but I will admit, I did end up preferring Win95..Though it did run just as well as 3.1 on my old 486DX..lol...

Its probably your RAM that is causing to be slow on th old computer, its a HUGE RAM hog.

Oh if you get annoyed easily stay away from Vista, it likes asking you to click things 3 or 4 times

Yes, when I was running 3.11 I was really scared of 95 when it came out. I refused to upgrade.
Then I took the plunge and tried it and wondered what all the fuss was about.
When 98 came out (and people were complaining about it like they are about Vista now) I swore I'd never touch it. 95 was cool - it was everything I needed.
Then 98SE was released and had good reports.
I jumped in and it was great.
Having run 98SE for so long, when XP Pro came out I was of the same mind - "don't need it, don't want it".
Upgraded one day and I'm still using it .. LOL.

It seems to me though, from everyone's comments, that the only real improvement on XP is that Vista has some flashy interfaces and "cool sidebar for kids". That doesn't seem enough of a reason to upgrade to something that is still unstable and unproved.

Sure, in a few years when the bugs have been ironed out, several SPs have been released and they have the thing running reasonably stable, I might consider.

For now, XP Pro does it all and does it very well with no headaches.

Not to change my own topic here but..lol

Is it true Windows 2003 SP2, is more stable than XP Pro SP2?

I got a 50 on 1 Disc with many versions of Win 2000, XP, and 2003.
I'm using Tiny 2003, which claims to be more stable than XP. So far I would say yes other than some fiddling with certain obscure drivers. And some games complain about being 2003, but I have a MSI script which removes restrictions.

Yes that the first thing you have to turn off
if you need to turn it of its call (UAC) and it is in User Accounts and Family Safety\User Accounts then click Turn User Account Control on or off

    Then untick the (UAC) box
    click ok and restart

Also - Vista has atrocious file copy speeds... Copying over a gigabit network I see about 8mbps MAX compared to XP which was up in the high 30's area. The only reason I'm running it is because of the new Media Centre interface, it's alot better than XP's. I can't really comment on the gaming aspect though.
