Lauren Weinstein sends in news of a major and disturbing Microsoft anti-piracy initiative called Windows Activation Technologies, or WAT. Here is Microsoft's blog post giving their perspective on what WAT is for. From Lauren's blog: "The release of Windows 7 'Update for Microsoft Windows (KB71033)' will change the current activation and anti-piracy behavior of Windows 7 by triggering automatic 'phone home' operations over the Internet to Microsoft servers, typically for now at intervals of around 90 days. ... These automatic queries will repeatedly — apparently for as long as Windows is installed — validate your Windows 7 system against Microsoft's latest database of pirated system signatures (currently including more than 70 activation exploits known to Microsoft). If your system matches — again even if up to that time (which could be months or even years since you obtained the system) it had been declared to be genuine — then your system will be 'downgraded' to 'non-genuine' status until you take steps to obtain what Microsoft considers to be an authentic, validated, Windows 7 license. ... KB971033... is scheduled to deploy to the manual downloading 'Genuine Microsoft Software' site on February 16, and start pushing out automatically through the Windows Update environment on February 23. ... [F]or Microsoft to assert that they have the right to treat ordinary PC-using consumers in this manner — declaring their systems to be non-genuine and down

Might be not 100% relevant - Some high schools which participate in MSDN program are issueing MS product including win 7 keys for free to high school students.
Just waiting for my daughter's application to go through their system to see which version she gets.
ok your right
good information givin
i can see a lot of copies not passing the test
hence the want of genuine keys
but understand that some of us old time forum lovers, see 1-5 time posters come and go with their wealth of knowledge and are never to be seen again
with me?
so cool, post good stuff
but take 5 seconds to explain what your saying, or you'll end up just another 1 hit wonder
ps. post the site
its a good read
but really, i bought my win 7 off a guy on ebay
he said it was legit key
ok im on 7 day suspension from ebay for selling illegit keys, but i thought they were legit?

i just did a bit of reading on this
"apparently" if you have win 7 allready activated
and you turn of the auto updates, i doubt you will be found
i may be wrong, but it prelongs spending $
face it, for smart people, they're really dumb
sell it for $50 not $400 and ppl wont care
bit like the movie screen really
greed prevails

No need to turn automatic updates off. This time the update is voluntary and actions taken against an user who chooses not to install it. Even if you install it the change is minimal.
Chin Chin
Old Dog, No Flies
i guess it kind of had to happen (inevitably) with all the dodgeyness with key sales.
Skeptics might even think this was a ploy to get people into win 7 and then encourage users to purchase a legit key (dont care if its a voluntary update) then again they did not hand it out on the side of a street! (win7)
As many people that are not into computers will accept it without knowing what it will do. Personally I have installed it on a few family members computers, and set it up to automatically accept updates (as these people have little to no idea about computers)
not arguing the rights and wrongs of pirating here.

If you feed ducks at a pond, chances are your bound to feed a goose or two without even knowing it.
I havent heard of a single MSDN key being blacklisted yet. My computer has all current Windows 7 updates.
same here Sanity,
but reading this has me thinking
"The company plans to make the update available for download from its website starting Feb. 16. Later in the month, the update will be available through the Windows Update system as an "important" update (as opposed to the higher ranking of "critical"), which means that people who have their Windows 7 machines set to receive those updates will receive them automatically as if they were getting a security patch. The update will also be uninstallable if a user finds out later and wants to remove it."
edit:I guess time will tell...
I am sure someone will create something that will prevent the update
