    Hi rick,

Has the drive been initialized and formatted?

Does the drive show in Disk Management located in Control Panel....Administrative Tools.........Computer Management...........Disk Management?

If you can see the drive in Disk management right click on the drive and initialize and then partition/format drive

    cheers

So I take it that the usb supplies the power. That could be the problem. I have a usb HDD case that takes lappy drives and it has a double end for the usb just to get enough power to run the damn thing. Maybe your usb socket is not giving enough power.

sounds like a lappy hdd 2.5inch if its not 3.5 (theres only 2 types)
if its sata 2.5 it can plug to a desktop with sata connector
if its ide 2.5 will only fit in a lappy.
if thats the case, chuck it in a lappy, hit it with a fdisk floppy or xp cd
    format it fat32 or ntfs

Most laptops have an easily accessible port for the hdd. usually in a little caddy. Lets you upgrade should you need to.

Otherwise, you can buy on flea bay or most computer shops little 3.5" - 2.5" IDE adapters with a molex plug coming off for power. then just plug it into PC like a normal hdd.
