    Default Winter Olympic Death.

Only posting this as its pretty poor form having poles that close to the track (as many have commented). Even at the end of the track..

"Nodar Kumaritashvili was killed after flying off the luge track during a training for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver."

    Code:
    http://salaswildthoughts.blogspot.com/2010/02/nodar-kumaritashvili-crash-video-luge.html
No disrespect to him or his family. RIP.

In any form of motorsport having poles that close to the track is just asking for what happened, downhill anything is no different.

I hope his death was instant and he did not suffered.

    Terrible way to go.

Shit, they really move in those luge events...no hope at that speed. Crazy design.

Amazed when I heard this. Apparently there were complaints about the design weeks ago that were ignored....

Poles at ANY, not just dangerous parts of a circuit like this is madness....unreal.

    Cheers

Even putting up guard rail type sheeting across the poles from track side would have saved his life, he would have just slid to the ground.

There must have been some real idiots controlling the safety aspect.

That's shocking. It's such a dangerous sport to begin with. I think they mentioned they get to speeds of up to 160km/h.

He went from around 90 mph to zero in no time at all... he didn't have a chance. What a stupid design.

What a f*/ked up design - obviously dangerous. Someone/organisation should be responsible. I am lost for words.

Very sad for someone to loose their life this way.

Even if the poles were heavily padded, it may not have saved him, due to the sudden deceleration and impact which causes internal organs to smash about inside the body.

This is a common cause of death in vehicle crashes, where sometimes there are no serious external injuries present.

However, some protection is better than no protection and to design and build the structure and to ignore warnings, causing death, must surely be criminal neglect.

I hope the luge course is boycotted.

Either way, it should be closed due to the unacceptable lack of safety.

Best way would be deflectors around the track maybe plastic to deflect them back in the track . Would be lot more subtle then a beam.

No if's, but's or excuses. They are responsible to remove as many risks as practicable

WTF happened to a risk assesment in the design, construction and testing phases?

    This was a preventable accident!

whist I agree, I assume (and stand to be corrected) but all luge tracks from previous winter games are like this in some form or another (I truly do not recall - the end/slowing down part of the track) . I'll say that, that pole is massive! I doubt next games it will be the same.

I guess safety measures, might interfere with TV coverage.

edit: is the roof structure really that heavy/span to require that many supports?

From reports, this luge is the longest, steepest and fastest ever built, so there must have been design changes compared to previous ones.
