when you plug the device into the computer, you should get a display on the gps screen with "USB" or "BATTERY" mode ... you got to press the USB icon so it enables the USB mode and the computer will read it then

(im going to assume that your model has this option, as the one I purchased does, yours may not?)

Only problem i'm having is that I wanted to backup everything first before fiddling but can only backup the SD card. I can't access the GPS unit itself which has WIN CE6 on it. My computer's usb port will not recognise it.

Mate i have been here 5 minutes but if you remove the card will it then see the flash memory, only a thought.

No, I've done all that. I thought it might have some thing to do with activesync.

With the sd card inserted and connected to pc I can read sd card so usb connection must be ok also card can be read in card reader ok.

Without sd card inserted and connected to pc I get nothing, pc dosn't recognize connection. I have downloaded windows mobile device centre thinking that I might require activesync but that's no good.

In the System menu there is a USB icon and when I click on that it reveals 2 icons one usb icon for Mass Storage the other a round ball with arrows on it for Activesync. I tried both when connecting to pc with and without card but pc can't see the flash memory with WinCe6.

Have you checked in the manual if you might need a power supply for that?
Some of these radioa need to be connected to power to access the flash or internal memory.
With active sync installed the PC should ask if you want to connect as soon as you plug it in - if the device uses that function.

luck duck, are you trying to access the 4GB internal storage ??
im not telling you how to suck eggs, but try going through your settings and there should be option in there to allow usb storage or similar....
OR something like "what should the device to when plugged in via usb" battery or storage mode ?
so that when you plug it in, it should show it on the pc

Hollowman I'm trying to access the internal storage where wince6 is. As I said in above post, in the System menu there is a USB icon and when I click on that it reveals 2 icons one usb icon for Mass Storage the other a round ball with arrows on it for Activesync. I tried both when connecting to pc with and without card but pc can't see the flash memory with WinCe6.

The "manual"? like most chinese stuff is a bit light when it comes to explaining things. However, I have been through the menu system and above is the closest I can find that mightallow connection to internal memory.

It will allow me in the menu systems to start up windows CE6 and it has Internet explorer, power pont, word doc etc etc.

That you get acces to some parts of the system with USB only is normal as these devices act as card readers too.
But as I said earlier some devices need power. Ususally a guy with a laptop sits in your car to install programs or do some changes (for a total noob case!).
So why not try it with power connected to the system - I see no more options besides from problems with your active sync....

Your probably right but I don't know why you can't access the internal memory for eg if you wanted to update later on.

I'm sure the answer is staring me in the face but I think have been through every thing. I never had such problems when i had windows XP Pro sp3 but now i'm running windows 7 pro and had to update all my drivers. I will try it on my sons computer and if it works ok there then it has to be bloody win 7.

    @Luck Duck,

I have a Windows CE 6.0 device (YFAtlas4) connected to my Windows 7 PC using Windows Mobile Device Centre (Activesync replacement) and I can see everything on the device. I have USB Settings on the device set to MS ActiveSync. If I remember correctly the first time I plugged it in, it installed the device drivers and off I went. Have you tried a different USB cable?

    Cheers, Ian

I got this reply from seller on ebay "WinCE in preloaded on the device not SD card. And it is locked".
However, after reading your post I tried again with Windows Mobile Device Centre (Activesync replacement) and the device set to icon activesync, I finally was able to connect to the everything.
I was able to copy most of the stuff over to my pc except for a heap of windows files as I got access denied message when trying to copy.
Yes I had show hidden files etc but may try an unlocker program to copy remainder.

Thanks to everyone for contributing at least I can access the SDram and flash memory. The adverts for this device say it has 128 MB SDram and Flash space 128MB but when reading the device it has 1GB space.

The Windows CE 6.0 files are copied from ROM to the \Windows folder on cold boot and even though you can see them they are probably locked by the system so you can't copy them. It's no big deal because a hard reset will copy a new set from the ROM replacing what's in the \Windows folder. The most important thing to copy is the unmodified registry because the registry in these devices is persistent over hard resets (that's why they are so easy to brick). I use CERegEditor which works from your PC and can do a complete backup of your device's registry. I've found that it is very easy to add custom stuff because you can control the GPS Application path from the built in menu, or simply use a custom Shell.ini in the root of the SD Card.

    Cheers, Ian

Bought the unit that Hollowman suggested and could not be happier with it. Just wondering if i could install Miopocket on a SD card in this device without F#$%ing it, have read warnings that you can brick cheap Chinese units going down this track, anyone had successfully installed Mio 3 on this unit.

sparky, i see you got your unit recently... do me a favour, dont install miopocket on it yet... use the thing for a little while lol ... i have used miopocket on my old mio and it did work however coz my device was old, i had issues.... im sure it will work, but here is what you can do before fiddling with mio pocket

    1) back up system registry as jards sugguested
    2) back up the files in your flash (i think there are some files in the internal 4GB)
    3) find out how you can hard reset it (this will be handy if you F*** it up)
