I would suggest that you first test your phoenix reader as a worker by using newcs or greywolf from your PC.

There are some Dreamboxes out there that simply will not run the Phoenix reader from the serial port however you can do everything else e.g. dreamup from the serial port. This could also be your problem.

the people that I helped with the serial port eventually got it working.

It's all in the tick aginst the serial port and a soft restart to enable changes.

they are such a shit box the 500s.

    update....
thanks to everyone for there help i have got it working now and thought id put up what i did so that it may help someone someday.
first thing i did was test my reader with greywolf. i connected my pheniox to the pc and was able to get the atr, coc, provid etc so from that i asssumed my reader was ok (i didnt try and get pics on the dreambox with greywolf as the server)
i then connected the pheniox back into the dreambox and used pretty much the same newscs file that z80 posted above but i had to add a line
    <parity>none</parity>
and i set mhz to 358 (also set reader to 3.57)

i then reticked the dont open serial port option and rebooted box and it started working. then i set mhz and programmer back to 600, rebooted and it was still working. then just for curiousity i unticked dont open serial port, rebooted and it was still working

in the end i think adding the parity line is was got it going

i just read through your thread and thought it was quiet helpfull with heaps of usefull info????

    anyways

first thing to do is to verify your reader is working ok, click on the link z80 put above and goto the 2nd last post on page 7 and download greywolf from there, connect your reader to the pc abd click on server/start in grey wolf. if everyting is ok then you should get all the card details filled in

do that first and let us know how you go, ill keep an eye on your thread

Have you tested to see if you take out the parity does it stop working?

for weeks ive been trying to get it working with preset images and many different newscs and cccam settings but with no luck. when i added the parity line, i also set the speed to 358 for the first time as well so it was one of those two things that got it going. As i have since set it back to 600 and it was still working im assuming it was the parity line that was the missing link

ill try and remove it from the newscs file and report back ........

Thanks for that. My comment above is dated - as you say quite a few responses now. Contacted seller and he is not sure about the jumper setttings (3.57/6.0 and SM/PX), so....
