Giving Linux a go

An app i use in another forum on this site is no longer supporting windows so i have to look at linux.
I have no idea at all but will nut this out.
Ive been told to avoid Ubuntu for this app and they advised debian or centos.
Which would be the beter to use?????
Id like to use it on a 2core processor as a server.

the following is from centos but which version to try????

CentOS 4.8 i386.
CentOS 4.4 i386 LiveCD.

????
I want to make it a duel boot as well
windows and linux

Debian failed in installation, Could install base packages both times
Trying centos tonight.

What is the app? As it is hard to give assistance where you don't disclose what you are trying to achieve. This is a very vague statement that many assumptions could be implied without further information.

Since Ubuntu is based on Debian - I find this claim interesting, but this is a waste of text as you have given up on Debian per you last post.

How long is a piece of string? More information required to answer this properly

Basically any modern Linux distribution is built to handle modern architecture - so should be no problems here.

LiveCD.

This is the way to go, as the name implies its an install before you permanently install!

Grub bootloader will help you here - make sure you enable the windows partition (more than likely done automatically)

Your right Porkchops, i was a bit vaige sorry
The app is Oscam,
The main reason for linux is oscam does not support windows and nor do the latest Newcs versions.
I would like to run this app on my PC and not on the dreambox as many are.
I found a link to another forum which showed me it can be done but i needed to set up a linux pc to do this.
This below quote from another forum may explain the Ubunto thing.

Ubuntu has ####ed up the packages and libs as well as the kernels .. so 99% of the people having problem with oscam on linux use ubuntu. I myself saw some package missing command (like arch ) in ubuntu. So they want to brand themselves as all cool and spiffy and easy to sue but the underlaying os has been crippled. They kernel are somehow modified and don't behave like the regular one (even for the same version) and they use older lib (glibc 2.8 instead of 2.9 and 2.10 on all other distro).. so ubuntu is fun on a live CD but if you're serious about linux .. use debian ( I use debian testing squeeze/sid in production) or CentOS (5.3 which I also use at work on over 4500 machines).

I couldnt get debian to load but got Cento5 to work perfectly.
I have no experiance in linux at all but am determined with help to get this working.

Firstly, welcome to the Linux community, as hopefully your experience will build over time of using this OS.

Thanks for the clarification - unfortunately I have little specific experience here, as closest is setting up mythbuntu and a couple of terrestrial tv cards. Although I have a DM500, have no idea how cam works - as just happy it does

With any Linux distribution, the online wiki/forum relevant to the OS is paramount, as imagine you have found the following.

Also personally find Google very helpful if you have some vague idea of what you are trying to achieve, as sometimes you need to refine the search once you have more of a clue as to the appropriate keywords.

statesmanjeff, You'll need to join the forum to view the info, but it's worth the trouble.

Have a read through both of them links, it will help you get Debian installed, and give you a good understanding of what is involved in getting a program to run on Linux. It should be reasonably straight forward substituting OScam, for CCcam or NewCS.

Thanks mate. Been a member of that one too for ages.
Got cc cam and newcs to work and both glitch free. They were easy, but really want to learn oscam on linux pc. Just tried Ubuntu but couldnt get code from this forum other thread, to install properly so will go back to Centos which has the tutorial in the other eoro forum. Centos loaded and installed oscam for me first go so i think thats a sign.
So many versions of linux. this is great. but getting my head away from wundows can be hard.

Got it all working AOK.
I tried duel boot with out any succes.
My pc is configured with linux.
When i did duel boot windows couldnt be loaded 2nd.
I had to do windows then linux but grub loader took over and wouldnt allow me to place windows first then linux 2nd when auto booting.
Can i just pull out the linux HDD wack in a new one and format windows onto it and just swap HDD when i need or is the boot loader on Pc going to stop this?
