a brand new disk needs to be set as active and formatted first because it is delivered with a low level format done on it.

if you have a floppy drive get a copy of a win98 boot disc and fdisc then format if you dont have a lappy get a copy of hirens boot cd then option 1 option 1 and set as active then format

The reason why your notebook is saying the system disk is missing is that in normal conditions the computer would boot from your hard disk,
but in your case you have just connected a blank hard disk to your computer and now your computer is complaining that the system is missing from it.

Anyway you have to put your windows XP disk in the DVD drive and then you have to set your computer to boot from the DVD drive first & that way it will boot up the XP installation process.

I think most newer notebooks display push F12 for boot options while booting up and there you can select to boot from DVD there, If not then you may need to change the boot order in the bios.

    Hope this helps

    Cheers

What type of HDD is it, if it's an IDE drive then the above instructions will work, however if its a SATA drive then WinXP doesn't have the SATA drivers, and that's another whole discussion...

my experience is from trying to downgrade Vista to XP on a SATA hard drive, if you're re-imaging a new HDD from system disks then I'd expect the manufacturer to include the relevant SATA drivers on those disks...or do you mean something else? On some systems you can edit the BIOS to overcome the problem.

    dunno, but i never ghost
if you do your getting all the defrag, temp files and crap with it.
he should get hold of a "good" xp with sp2-3 quick format and install
40 min install, 1 hr screwing around with programs ect
its a small price to pay for a good install.
    my 2 bits anyway.
ps. if it see's the sata drive from boot without the F6 to install blaa, blaa, its ok.

totally agree , all i have done is slipstreamed various sata drivers into a xp boot disc with basic applications as well such as win rar / nfo reader /acrobat reader and a few other basics that are always used.

It is made as a silent install so i have no need to be near the computer apart from the very beginning where i assign the drive for the installation.

im glad someone agrees with me lol
you can do a install, update, programs ect, do a back up
6 months later, your os craps, your backups 100mb short of ms crap updates late, game patches, software updates, not worth the drama.
as the man said, learn to slipstream, custom your install cd with nlite and your cheering
