    Default about time

well for the first time i would have to say that i agree with what the qld government has introduced in rearguards to drink driving and i think all states should follow

"THE Queensland Government will take a new "tough stance" on drink driving, with the introduction of new alcohol interlock devices approved in State Parliament this morning.

Premier Anna Bligh said the devices, that require drivers to provide a breath test in their vehicle before it can be driven, will become mandatory for "high risk drivers".

These include first time offenders who record a blood alcohol level of more than .15 percent, offenders who record a blood alcohol level between .05 and .15 more than once in a period of five years, offenders charged with dangerous driving while adversely affected by alcohol or drivers who fail to supply a blood sample or breath test when asked.

She noted the device was also a financial incentive for drivers not to drink, because those who are required to install the interlocks will need to pay for the devices themselves.

Ms Bligh noted that last year, 71 of Queensland's fatalities were caused by drink driving, 29,000 drivers were convicted of driving over the limit, and 12,000 were convicted of having a "high end" blood alcohol level of .15 or more.

Ms Bligh said the measures gave all Queenslanders "extra assurance" that the roads were safer.

She said the devices were a "bold move", designed to save lives.

and if you cant afford the interlock unit you get an auto 2 yr disqualification.

Why not just crush the repeat drink drivers cars that will slow them down.

I'ts a pity car manufacturers don't make them on all new cars sold. How about we shut the gate, before the horse bolts.

Not everyone drinks and drives, and not everyone should have to fork out 50+ bucks a month to have the data checked and the device recalibrated.

I'm personally getting sick of new laws that punish everyone in the name of prevention, perhaps it would be better if the boot was laid in heavier on those who actually do the crime instead.

I can see a lot of pissheads placing their kids in danger by having them with them just to blow in the thing.
I think the day that Anna Bligh does something that works or is good for the state we should declare it a public holiday!!!!

3 cases recently of Drunk/Disqualified drivers (MALE & FEMALE) with their Children in the car with them shows that gadjets could be easily bypassed by getting one of the kids to blow into the device.
One woman was 3 times over the limit at 4pm in the afternoon picking up the kids from school !!!!

If these people are prepared to drink and drive with scant regard for their own lives, others on the road AND their own Children too and then try to elude the Police by speeding, what the Hell do you do to stop them before they get into the car ??

I suggest handcuffs held 2 feet apart apart by a 'spreader bar' and bloody big placard front and back thats says 'DRUNK DRIVER' when they leave either their home or a jail (Curfew Detention) and they be accompanied EVERYWHERE they go in Public.

Drastic?? so is being DEAD or crippled by these jerks as most times they walk away unscathered in accidents.

Cost us Money?? arent we already paying for their Rehab or their Victims now??

Why not put in a tracker device, like what holdens have done, (Sim Card under dash board) person gets into car blows into tube, their mobile phone rings they are then asked radom question. If questions are answered correctly car is allowed to start?

Sorry to be defeatist BUT who do you know who your talking too as asking a question wont identify the talker.
Unless the seat has a pressure switch and cuts the engine if vacated, what is to stop someone else doing the startup and then changing places ?

Someone suggested crushing the drunks car, good idea so long as it isnt stolen or belongs to another.
Realy the only other way is to CRUSH the DRUNK !!!
THAT would solve the problem right at the source.

A lot of these offenders appear to be already suspended/ disqualified from driving. Why not get really serious and have a mandatory (scary word isn't it) law that states if you are caught driving whilst disqualified / suspended automatically get double the suspension time behind bars. That is if license suspended for 6 months & get caught driving do 12 months in the big hotel. When you get out still have the whole suspension time as well.

A lot of peolple will read this and say 'what bout the rights of the offender', well I say stuff them, by driving whilst suspended they have proven they have no respect for the law, so force them to have some.
