Does anyone know what or why one would use or need the SoftCam.key file?
are you serious ?
Here in 'oz its almost useless (have a look inside and you might figure out why I say 'almost') ... but in Europe - its better than having a gamma / whitey here
why?
In Europe people are blessed with much 'tighter' geography - where the birds in the sky which serve multiple countries have overlapping footprints ... so if you live in the UK and like to watch 'porn' (as a good example) ... you cannot be censored by the UK government - since you can easlily pick-up the transponders on the bird serving Sweden, Italy, Spain and Germany - just a few neighbours who must get their daily dose of this type of content - which is not allowed in the UK. Simillary what is 'freely' available in the UK might be banned in other countries - but they can catch the UK birds ...
Now ... when there is a large community in each country and they want to watch content not aimed at them ... and most importantly ... they have no legitimate way in getting a 'legit' smartcard ... so they resort to sharing the 'keys' for the most popular transponders / birds - allowing everyone with the know-how to watch the content freely - yes FREE - no criminal elements and no money changing hands
If you have a DM or are running a PC based DVB-S card then you would be using programs which have various cam / plugins / emulators - including the ability to 'read' the SoftCam.key files which open the encrypted content of various providers.
Since we only have one or two providers here in 'oz which share same content (most of it) and we don't have such a large community of viewers that want to watch other countires content (we can't unless you have a >3M dish and then just only) - then there are insufficient resources here to provide a FREE way of watching 'oz encrypted content.
Because of this - the door for a criminal element (those who make a living of selling a means of viewing encrypted copntent) is wide open.
There just is not enough of a critical mass of technically able people willing to provide a means for FREE viewing of encrypted content.
Remember - there is a very important factor which is in play here and not in Europe ....
Those in the EU who provide the keys for free viewing do so in the knowledge that the content will be viewed by the people from another EU member - who are being excluded from purchasing a 'legit' subscription. There is a community ethos that believes that there should be no exclusions for content within the EU - hence they 'help' you to view - if the provider will not
In Australia the above does and cannot apply - all content here is for 'oz ONLY - we are not being excluded other countries content (there is no EU in 'oz) - so providing a means to view free TV is in essence seen as a criminal activity by our EU friends - and as a result something that they officially will never help us to persue
When I was in the UK and did a blind scan on 19.2E - I got over 1500 channels - and that's just from ASTRA - there is another 1500 at 13E , etc, etc - TV heaven for some
... sorry for the rant ... but I think somewhere in there is your answer about SoftCam.key
Cheers
Thanks Eyesee.
I travelled Europe last year and found that it was fantastic being able to get some many channels from Satellites there.
Stayed in a unit in Florence that had a Sat service which I managed to get into the STB install menus...did blind scans, to find I was able to watch more reasonable programs ... especially after 11pm... plenty of porn ... not that I was looking for that in particular.
Thanks Again
Regards
Hey eyesee, that was a brilliant explanation!
Well done mate
eyesee - well said and explained
we mightnt have the eu - but (gets up on his soapbox)
my word we have the anzac legend .. now we should get all that good kiwi content as well ... so.... bugger it .. well I am off for fush and chups
[humour on]
(scratches his head) so the missus gets a say in technical stuff like size and location of dish .. interesting concept
[/humour off]
I have a 3.2meter here and would probably go close
which bird is kiwi stuff on - wasnt there a strange(switched) polarity problem on last sat launch for kiwi services ?
then I guess one would need to find a friend to subscribe a card for me
does sky still sell sat services ? or who is the provider down there now ?
You can get foxtel in NZ on about a 3m dish although i believe it's trickier the other way. Where are you?
The bird you are looking for is Optus d1.
I have heard quite a few first hand reports from the B1 days - where people tried it and couldn't get a squeak but i haven't heard from anyone who has actually tried it since they changed the sat.
Give it a try and report back!
p.
Can't see myself ever putting in a dish that size but I'd be really interested to know too. Even with a 3.2m, I guess you'd have to be right on the east coast.
Without a sub you should be able to do a scan atleast. I remember there being reports of transponder stuff ups on the D1 launch.
There's some NZ FTA stuff on it as well if you can get it.
The problem with the transponders was that the H and V polarity were back to front so it meant that a fair chunk of SKY NZs signal ended up on a AUNZ beam when it should have been on an NZ only beam. They eventually switched all their users over to the opposite polarity and it is less of an issue now.
Freeview NZ ended up having to launch their service on the opposite polarity to the one they'd advertised but it wasn't the end of the world because they hadn't started broadcasting yet.

Hi Everyone,
Ive seen someone who has sky/tvnz with good reception, his brother brought his sub card from Auckland when he was visiting, it worked fine in his box pointing at d1, was quite surprised as its only looked to be a 90cm dish in adelaide.
