    Default Satellite receiver no power

    Hi,

I have a satellite receiver box (Xtreme) with no power at all.
Is there a common fault with the PSU, maybe a certain capacitor that goes or am i better off taking it in for repair.
Have taken apart and looked over but cant find anything unusual. Have some soldering experience.

    Cheers

    Have you done any measurements
When you do things right, people won't be sure that you have done anything at all

Never seen or had an Extreme but in most boxes the PSU is a separate circuit board (obviously the one with the lead going to it)
On this board check any capacitors for bulging. If they look slightly 'swollen' replace them with a new one. They're only cheap at Jaycar or Dick Smiths.
I'm no electronics wizz but I've fixed a couple that way (even a CD stacker aswell)

What is the fascination people seem to have with girls with huge jugs - that's the third avatar I've seen so far!

Anyways, most of the sat receivers use a generic switch mode power supply. Disconnect from the mains, make sure the high voltage caps are discharged [if the supply isn't working then there's every chance that the 300V DC caps are still charged up as they have nowhere to discharge to].

As suggested already, replace any dodgy looking caps. Check for open circuit resistors (high in value) and do basic checks on all diodes etc.

The main chopper transistor is usually a FET - check to see it's not shorted.

There are often two high value resistors in series (120K 1W) or similar that provide the startup voltage for the oscillator and drive circuitry. If one or both of these has gone high or O/C then it won't start.

By the sounds of things you aren't competent with working on live equipment
so I won't go any further with diagnostics.
If you get to this point and draw a blank I'd take it in for repair as you could either make things worse, or give yourself a nasty zap.
