Can someone please tell me whats involved unlocking the above phone which is on the optus network? Can it be done? and how?

yes it can be done with unlocking tools

Apart from the suggestion from Dr. Mobile, you can go to your nearest Optus store and request that you want to unlock the phone from the Optus network and I know with some unlocking procedures you need a sim card from another carrier to perform this.
