Default CCD - what does it mean?

OK I will be the bunny!

When I am comparing cameras what does the CCD rating mean?

    1/3

    1/4

    HAD

    etc etc?

1/3, 1/2, 1/4, 2/3 is usually referring to the size of the image sensor, measured in inches... eg: 1/4"

CCD, CMOS, etc is the type of image sensor. CCD = Charged Coupled Device and CMOS = Complimentary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor.

HAD is a Sony (I think propietory) technology for it's 'Hole-Accumulation Diode Charged Coupled Device'.

From experience, the HAD and Super-HAD imaging sensors provide increased sensitivity and reduced vertical smear from strong light sources in view.

CCD is a higher quality imaging chip than CMOS, but uses a lot more power by comparison.

CCD will provide less-noise imaging in low light situations compared to CMOS.

Google is your friend for more indepth research between the two technologies.

If quality imaging is important, especially in low light and high contrast situations, I'd opt for CCD.

Yes, the larger the image sensor, the higher the resolution.

Also, 3 CCD is better than a single chip, as the spectrum is divided into Red Green Blue.
