Default what are your favourite software programs and why?

ok i thought i would ask this mainly so we can enlighten each other and open new doors for each other possibly in using undiscoverd programs

what are your favourite software programs and why?

i mainly am asking about recreational or creative software but not limited to. include a description of funtion if u want. also say if it is linux or mac or for mobile phone if not microsh*t based. also recommendations of better software than whats being used by others.

    i will start with

adobe photoshop - its like a 5 acre toolshed of graphics tools and there is sooo many tutorials out there. whether it be simple scans or celeb porno fakes its got the right stuff. i love graphics programs

adobe audition (formerly cooledit pro), i like it for its multitrack capabilities and so many dx addons u can use (effects etc). music is life. i use for ringtones, live recording and studio recording, old tape/vinyl restoration. its not too hard on the learning curve to do basic stuff and capable of much more.

mozilla browser. well it is recreational as well as educational and a useful tool for work related stuff. it does job.

opera mini. browser for mobile phone. yeah this works better than the browser came with my z800i sony erricson. layout heaps better. never tried Opera Mobile coz i just didnt need to, anyone?

cucusoft video converter. good for converting vids i download to make my dvd's. u have to tinker with it. i use a rewritable dvd to see if the end pic is good then do a hard copy.

fruity loops. audio loops etc. i dont play with it much these days but i still love it. i love the ts808 synth in it. just about anyone could be a doof dj with it.

that will do me for now. maybe add some more later. i play with alot of stuff when i have time. just dont have much time these days.
cheers and thanks for the info

MS Office - as it makes using office easier for me.
Winrar - Very handy for all compression needs.
Alcohol120 - great for mounting iso's and burning
Unigraphics NX - Great for 3D Modeling and Surfacing, helps me make $$$$$$$$$$
Auto Gordian Knot - Great for turning DVDs into avi's

    Just to name a few...

Convertxtodvd to turn downloaded avi's into a dvd..it can even add subtitles and menus if doing a tv series. It's simple and produces the goods.

Paintshop pro x2....cause I can use it....too many options with photoshop and too big a learning curve...one day maybe.

NOD32 - best AV I have found so far. Sits in the background, doesn't nag or give false alerts and jumps on things when it needs to.

Picture Publisher 5.0 - sure, it's old, but there are things I can do on this that would take me years to learn on Photoshop. Plus, it's quick, simple and easy to use.

Adobe Audition 2.0 - in the studio, it's great! I have spent hundreds of hours editing with this one.

PDW - POCSAG decoder - how else would I decode pager traffic?

I like youtube get. It enables me to download and convert videos for my grand kids mobiles.

I also like AVg V8,0.85 which is a combined anti virus and spyware programme. Works really well.

Ad Muncher is another one that stops them damm flashing banners on some web sites.

It's all Linux and I luv it, not only because it is free for all
and a lot is now available for Windows too (also for free of course).

Open Office - full replacement for MS office
    Gimp - like Photoshop
Inkscape - Vector Graphic (much easier to use than Adobe)
Audacity - fault free Audio editing, conversion, etc
Kdenlive - Video editing, conversion, etc.
Rosegarden - Music production like Cubase
LMMS - sequencer like Fruity Loops
QUCS - mindblowing easy to use electronic circuit simulator
QCAD - so much easier than AutoCAD, therefore recreational (hobby)

    and I can't live without:
Krusader (Total Commander in Windows) - so much easier than using seperate software for every little bitty thing that you can do with files (including what M$ does not want you to do )

and I really enjoy living without anti malware, trojan, spyware, virus software

    A good topic.

I dont really have many......Kaspersky Internet Security is one......I like how it does what its meant to with a minimum of fuss.

And I will say Windows Vista.....I now have it running as reliably as XP and it is now my preferred operating system even though I have both on dual boot.

Don't you still need the live CD with Mandrake?
Both Ubuntu and Suse have the option to install the whole OS and all the applications and personal data that will fit, on a USB stick.
A 4G stick is sufficient, 8G is massive.
Today, if it doesn't fit on your keychain or in your mobile it is not portable
