    Default RAID in Windows

    Hi all,

I am using Windows 7 and I am trying to set up 2x 2TB SATA drives in RAID-1 (mirrored).

I set up the RAID in my BIOS correctly and created the array in the RAID controller setup (F10 while the computer is in POST), as described in my motherboard manual, and when the computer boots the POST reports that the RAID is "healthy". When I get to Windows, however, only one drive appears in Disk Management. This drive is called "NVIDIA MIRROR 1.81TB". It seems odd to me because I thought Windows should recognise this as two drives, and then allow me to create a mirrored volume.

However, if I delete the RAID in the RAID controller setup screen but leave RAID enabled in the BIOS, then Windows will not detect either drive.

If I delete the RAID in the RAID controller setup and disable RAID in the BIOS then Windows will detect both drives.

    My specs are:
    2x Hitachi 2TB SATAII HDD
    ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe Motherboard
    2GB 400Mhz DDR2 RAM
    CPU is AMD 4800 (can't remember exact specs - it's a dual core 2.4Ghz)

    Any help would be appreciated.

Ah ok. So there's really no purpose
to the "New mirrored volume" option in disk management?

Yes. You need to be able to format it somehow.

No but my point is that I can't
select "New mirrored violume" because disk
management only sees one disk. The only
option I have is to make it a simple
    volume.
And then a basic or dynamic disk (I'm not
sure which I should choose here)

    Lightbulb

    Its already mirrored.

Read your RAID controller manual it will explain everything to you

Google the microsoft manual for dynamic disks as you don't understand what it does.

If all that fails you can ring a mobile computer service to format your raid array for you

Hint: the key term here is "volume" not "disk"
