only one I know of is the one for playing emulators and such using the GC side of the wii
it will not let you play wii or gc backups
but it is a softmod so to speak and allows homebrew to play

Yeah soft mods to play backups!!!! Did mine nice and easy.Plays about 95% backups. Don't know if i am allowed to post links to the files and step by step instructions here though. Suffice to say you need an SD card (less then 2gb) and a copy of Zelda Twilight Princess. Once on you get the homebrew channel and can play all sorts of homebrew including a program that runs backed up wii games on a unmodified console.

thanks for your replies guys but i think i may end up just getting it hard modded.

Seems with new games comes new updates that make soft mods not work anymore and needing an update so ill just get the hard mod and no problems.

Have WiiGator soft mod up and running works a treat. Short term solution until warranty runs out then hard modded.

Try this very easy if have the Home Brew Channel already set up just copy files into apps folder. Verbatim DVD-r media is highly recommended.

Yeah I got it going with the latest firmware update 3.4 and even added a new channel for it that looks like the original disc channel!

    Cheers,
