I have a 2000 model Subaru station wagon which some of the clear coat is peeling away, is it best just to respray that side of the vehicle or the whole car? It's currently metallic paint two tone. What costs are involved? And can any recommend a good panel beater in the south east of Melbourne. Willing to travel to get a good quality job done.

where is the clear peeling?? have you owned the car from new? peeling clear can sometimes reveal a previous repair. A full respray if you want a top job is going to cost around 6K, yep scarey price, depending where the clear is flaking can make a big difference to price a full respray might not be needed.
It's on the rear passanger door just under the window, This door was resprayed before I purchased the car as it was repaired dent from a shopping trolley.

obviously a cheap repair done, look to be honest with you, to have that door redone will cost you well under $800 if that door is the only blemish that worrys you? find a paint shop that has spray oven, bloody metalics are hard to get right partically a car that has a few years on it, you have to allow for fade, the other alternative is to get the whole side painted, but you have to ask yourself how far do you go? do you plan keeping the car for ever?

paint work is expensive, Especially if two tone, & metallic,
having said that,
I would have to see it, to see what needs to be done & if the problem is only on one side of the car, & in only one color area or two, or if the problem is extending all over the car, (could be a big job or a small job)
(Has a repair been done on the car in the area it is now pealing, this is sometimes a cause of it to peal ?)
Panel Beating or Spray painting is usually cheaper if you get it done in the country (or outer suburbs) than in the city, & also cheaper if you go to a repairer who works on all the everyday cars & not the ones who specialize in Prestige Cars,
I would suggest getting some quotes, & while you are there have a look at the quality of work they do, & get a feel of, if they are a reputable repairer or not.
The quoted price may indicate if the car is worth spending the amount of money or not.
Good Luck
P.S. sorry I do not live in your area to recommend anyone.
Edit: it looks like the pealing may be from the previous repair, so the rest of the car should be OK, then it looks like painting one side at the most

just because the clear coat is peeling does not mean it has been repainted, a lot of imported car suffer the same problems as the clear coat was not designed for australian conditions, but they have fixed the problem as the new cars that come in don't suffer that problem anymore.
Tagg
I finish paying the car off next week YEY, it's only worth $12,000 now so paying 5K for a respray is not worth while unless I put that WRX STI motor in it. I might just get a quote to get one side resprayed as I had the other side fixed 12 months ago when i hit a bollard in a petrol station.

Manufacture another accident, perhaps another servo bollard
Insurance excess is far less than the respray cost.
Just point to the problem on the door,
& say this is what I want fixed,
They will say..... oh but I have to blend the metallic paint .....etc... etc...maybe each panel each side of the door, & could be the whole side of the car (depending)
(which also means Remove & Replace of the panel parts),
You will say.... Oh ..... I didn't think it was that big a job, but I want a good job......
They will give you a quote
Good Luck

I reckon a good respray would be about the same cost of a year insurance and the gap LOL
When you do things right, people won't be sure that you have done anything at all
Be good if you can find a write off car in Ebay or wreckers that has same color though! Lol!
Allow at minimum $500 for the repair if its just the door being repaired.
If you want the car repaired properly the whole side should be resprayed as you can match the color but cannot match the way the flake sits in the metallic paint.
With small problems like that i use to wait for my car to have a small accident and then tell the panel beater if you want the job, i want other damages around the car fixed in the quote being handed to the person who hit my car.
pretty much everything said here is correct, if I was you I would just get a couple of quotes, from some reputable paint shops, that will be the hard part though, finding a reputable paint shop is like finding a good mechanic, they almost don't exist!
and with the hail storm recently all the good paint shops are booked out till this time next year! I know a good paint shop in Ferntree Gully but with the hail storm hitting them the hardest I'm sure they wouldn't be taking on small jobs until next year.
and for the record you can get a full respray for $3k that will be a good job, generally all they have to do is sand the whole car back, bog up a couple of dents and paint, as long as it's the same colour and the car is in good condition in the first place, your $6k jobs are proper jobs, and if you want to do it right and have a fantastic job your looking at more like $12k.
someone suggested that a country panel shop was the go, in my opinion the county shops don't have the experience or the know how, they seem to have a little bit of laid back attitude to doing things properly, who's going to have more pressure on them to to do the job right the first time, a busy inner melbourne suburb shop that pumps out tens of cars a week or a country shop that does maybe 3 cars a week.
$20K is back to bare metal show car level, everything is incredibly perfect, panel fit, dead level/straight, door gaps, engine bay, inside door jambs, etc.
The last show car that we had done with a $20K spray job was seriously deep and perfect off the gun without any buffing needed, not even a hint orange peel in the paint work.
Paint alone was over $3K.
The guy doing it is know Aust wide for spraying only show cars.
Average spray jobs start at 1k for a cheap rub down non metalic with just a few coats to $6k for something pretty decent in metallic with deep clear.
The point behind the prices is prep, the 20K jobs are back to metal, high filled, blocked (sometimes put on a rotisserie to get under the car) and brought to perfection, the cheaper ones are rubbed down with a little high fill and blocking.
