replace amd socket 754 mobo for under $50?

hi guys, my mate has asked me to fix his pc. as far as i can see the motherboard is no longer working, though i don't have any way of testing the cpu yet. basically i'd like to replace the motherboard with a second hand one for under $50. it's an AMD socket 754 and from my initial search it seems they are quite hard to find.

so my next option would obviously be to replace the mobo and cpu together. i don't know what speed the existing cpu is, but i do know all he wants to do with the comp is surf the net. i can get a Pentium III 800Mhz cpu and matching motherboard for $50, but don't know if it will be too uncomfortable for browsing the net?

any other ideas or places i could find a socket 754? thanks

To browse the net you need bugger all cpu power...my old 350MHz clunker from years ago worked fine for net surfing. Games,encoding, graphics....now thats another story.
Also, make sure the ram and graphics card[if present] will be compatible with a different motherboard

ill send u a p4 moby & 2.4 cpu for 50 incl post

not worth buying a 754 unless its like under 30$
otherwise,throw a new am2 moby & cpu in it, but then u need ddr2 ram

yep i used to have a pentium 3 866 which was great at the time, but you have to consider that back then we were all running windows 9x which would have used less memory than xp, and had dial up connections, so you woudln't even have dreamed of looking up something like a few videos on youtube.

the ram is DDR400 and i'm hoping to find one with onboard video, though i think i have an old agp card that i could throw in

unless i get a better offer from someone with a 754 mobo lying around, it's a deal it's ddr400 but i'm sure the guy would pay $15 for a 512 stick of ddr2 if need be. what ram do i need for your moby?

ull need ddr400/ddr1 for phills board(which you should already have)

im having a bit of trouble changing the nameserver....
im a bit short on time these days as well during business hours
thats why its taken so long, got on the phone today but .
