Could just be the backlight gone, can you see the light coming on at all?
Hi guys amate has a old acer laptop and the LCD screen stop workink,does that mean the lcd is worn out,it works fine if you connect external monitor?

Get him to look closely at the screen, and ask him if he is able to see a very faint image. If it is there, its a common problem, either the backlight or the inverter probably have gone. For an old lappy its probably not worth the hassle or the expense to fix. But cheap 2nd hand lcd or inverter may be found on sites like ebay.
Don't forget that there is a lid switch that turns off the backlight when the lid is closed. It's often near the hinge area and if you flick it a few times with your finger you may see the screen come back on. It could be a magnetic switch.
and if its like the Acer 500T laptop the bios battery will be flat (located under keyboard) it'll default to external vga only until its replaced
