Default XP, I cant get the Toolbar to 'hide'

I cant see what I have done but the damned toolbar wont hide.
I have ticked and unticked 'Lock' ticked HIDE and it wont go away.

Place cursor anywhere on the toolbar
    Select Right hand mouse button
    Select properties
    Select Taskbar TAB
    Select appropriate options

I got it back, I clicked on 'Show Desk Top' and the taskbar disapeared.
Then somehow I managed to download ALL of 'My Documents' to the task bar.
That kept me happily occupied for half an hour or so.
Apart from my total ineptitude, this computer hates me and does things that make me look me look even more inept.
I havent changed any settings so I have no idea how the taskbar settings were changed.
