i ended up going with this:
theres a 2 to 3 month wait but i brought it from ebay.

I don't understand how you can compare to the Tvix when it is not available in Australia, I can understand if you are referring to the previous models of the Tvix, but the model I have mentioned is leaves the Popcorn for dead.
The popcorn is a player only, whereas the Tvix is a player, tuner and PVR straight out of the box.
Just compare the specs.
Nice unit George, i didn't realise you couldn't buy these from Lako Pacific?
I have used Some of the other products and the Z500 for that matter.
To be honest, i am still waiting for a good solution for the LAN based media player. Some are ok for us Techy people, but to find one that has Internal HDD, DVD caddy, Sigma Chipset or better, HDMI, LAN, a good OSD and menu system and doesn't lock up or reboot......... I'm still yet to see it.
Nice couple of units though... i'll have a good read up on them. Yes this is making my old Mediagate MG350HD look a bit long in the tooth.
One thing i've noticed about the older Sigma Chipset, is when you play WMV9 HD files, the video is fine, but the 7 channel audio is compressed to 2 channel. Seems by reading the specs on the Tvix, this still the same problem, yet with the Popcorn, it mentions it... funny considering they both run the very same Sigma Designs chipset???
Brilliant video review on the popcorn here:

Just grab a coffee, sit down and save hours of searching the net. review is a little lame and he spends more time talking about power consumption than file format support (which makes you wonder what he is hiding?), but it's still worth a look as a starting point
List of latest firmware fixes for the Popcorn:
Geez, i'd of hated to see the fisrt one.... Must of been released with more bugs than Vista

When I was shopping for my HD player (upgraded the modded xbox-1) I found that the Tvix was what I was looking for but for the same price Lako wanted for the previous model I could source in the 6500 from the Netherlands for the same price, only because Lako said they were not going to bring them in.
Fair enough. Any word on that Audio issue with WMV9 and WMA PRO?
I guess. The specs on the Tvix says it doesn't not handle it. Popcorn says it does... Funny considering it's the same chipset.
My Mediagate MG350HD does the same thing..... plays WMV9 but not the 7.1 WMA PRO!!! such a stupid omission
This site has a lot of reviews
I know the earlier Tvix needed the firmware upgraded, however, the 6500A has worked flawlessly out of the box.
I'm running it on HDMI v1.3 to my LCD which gives me Full HD unlike others. No complaints yet
What do you mean by Full HD George? Or unlike others?
The old Mediagate runs 1080p at 22 to 35 fps no worries via HDMI to a Bravia 1080p display? And that is even via a Receiver in the middle
Is there something to be gained? Or have i missed something?
Cos it still doesn't play WMA PRO.... no matter how you connect it.
Does your Tivx play that Audio format George?
Meaning it ain't cheap.
Fair enough though if it's good quality.
There is one on e-bay for $800 pp.
Don't bother looking into it too hard, I'll be honest and say that's out of my price range, although it does look sweet.
Look's like I'll go with the budget man's choice the Popcorn Hour. I can wait a few weeks before I buy, not in a screaming hurry.
i am also trying to source TVIX HD M-6500A i am in new zealand no one here sales them yet , i can get one from the u.s for $600 NZD including postage thats from a legit company as well ...anyone else know where to get one from closer to home ,mainly worried about the warranty when u do the importing etc.
