    Default Blocking Websites

    Hi guys

Trying to find out if theres a way to block secure web pages. Im trying to block my daughter from accessing certain sites until I allow her. I simply put the sites into my Netgear router and blocked them. This works fine but she found, via school, that there is an easy workaround and I cant seem to over come this.

Take for instance . I can put this into my blocked site in the router and it does block the site. But, if you type then you get straight in. This happens for quite a few sites and if you google how to get past blocked sites it tell you this.

My question is, how can I stop this from happening? There has to be a way or else the router blocking option is pretty hopeless.

    Thanks

    Paul

had that issue once with my child so we sat down and i said

" looks like you are cleverer than myself because you got around it "
she smirked and said " yep there is always a way"
yes dear there is so when i check the logs next time if you have accessed any of those sites there will be no net.

needless to say a day later she had no net for a month , it stopped her
dont say linux if i wanted it id install it

Can't you just block the site using the keyword in the router? eg "facebook"

You could just add the website to your windows host file.

On Philquads recommendation i installed K9 as administrator and it has stopped access to all chat sites etc, daughter is only 7 so it will be a while before she is able to get around it if at all.

There will always be a way around filtering techniques as many of us will know, i know that i was always in a struggle with my mother regarding internet usage and i always found a way around it.

Kids dont care about them. Remember when you were a kid ?

I use the parental filter on Kaspersky Internet Security thats on their PC. KIS is locked down with a password of my choosing and they cant turn it off or change the settings on it. I have only blocked one website directly, facebook. Man I hate that site.

All decent internet security suits have parental controls.... just a matter of setting them up and away you go.

Try it then. Block facebook and then search using
you'll find you will still get access. The https because it's encrypted it bypassed the keyword block.

Have already installed software that records her every keystroke, passwords, websites visited, chats sent and received etc. I dont actively use it but I've told her its there and showed her what I can see. So now she's free to surf away knowing that I can check anytime, but I would still like to be able to block sites easily. https sites bypass the conventional blocks. Google it if you don't believe me. School kids use this to get past school blocked sites.

Edit your hosts file. You can find it in the below location.

    Windows>system32>drivers>etc

Open "hosts" with notepad and add the following entries

    127.0.0.1 facebook.com
    127.0.0.1
    127.0.0.1
    127.0.0.1
    127.0.0.1
    127.0.0.1

By doing this you are redirecting facebook to your localhost 127.0.0.1(own machine). This applies to all websites you want to block. Most nanny programs will automatically fill the hosts file with entries such as porn sites etc.

If you find you cannot edit the hosts file (mainly in Vista). Copy the file to your desktop, make the changes, save then copy back to the Windows>system32>drivers>etc folder.

Have been using K9 on the kids PC's and it works a treat, no youtube, facebook, or anything like that, highly recommended for real young ones. More often than not they click on a link not knowing what it is and bingo K9 jumps in and stops it. Has very good parental controls too so you can overide for 15 mins or more.

K9 that software comes packaged with Computer Associates ISS... If not where did you get it from... If memory serves me correct that is a good program.
