Default best drive for scratched media?

Im looking at getting a new dvd writer and would like one thats good at reading scratched media ,ive read the liteon, lg's and samsungs were good a few years ago.

Does anyone know if this is still the case? or of any good new drives for scratched disc's? I currently have a nec 16x ide something or another, it doesnt seem to good at reading bad discs.

You might be hard pushed to find one now but in my opinion for damaged and inferior media the HL-DT-ST DVD GDR8163B is the only way to go - I prefer the LG variant.
This opinion is offered from a READ only aspect - this drive can without the correct firmware installed develop write problems.

I've been using LG drives exclusively for the last 5? years and had only a couple of failures in that time.
They seem to handle most media including scratched discs fairly well.

If I get a really scratched disc I will clean it with Brasso first. Increases the readability no end.
