    Default Newbie with some questions

    Ok here is my situation.

I don't know much about satellites. I bought one of these off ebay:
after a friend told me he was getting some good fta channels.

    I'm located in Melbourne, Australia.

I also bought a dvb-s so I can watch it on my computer.

    Now my question are:

    1. Which satellites can I get from my location (Melbourne) considering the dish that I have?
    2. Can I get any american or european satellites?
    3. Is the lnb good enough to get strong signals?
    4. Is setting up easy? Before I moved into my house the previous owners had a satellite there, but now all that is left is a pole on my garages roof.
    5. Can I get echostar 1/2 at 148.0°W?
    6. What are some good fta channels worth watching?
    7. Can I get agila 2 at 146.0W?

    More to follow...

    OK,

    1. a 65cm will struggle to get really good strong KU signals from all avail KU sats. The Optus's D2, C1 and D1 will produce a strong enough signal for you.

    2. You dont have a motor on your dish, so how are you going to automatically move it to a new location? You will have to decide which satellite you wish to point at and be happy with that.

    3. You have a 'High' KU LNB. This will only allow signals from the following Sat's
    Asiasat 4 122E
    Optus D2 152E
    Optus C1 156E
    Optus D1 160E
    Intelsat 8 166E
    intelsat 2 166E
    Nss5 177E

    4. Notice the freq. You can only receive stuff in Oz land from around 75E to 177E. That's our hemishere and trying stuff on the other side (west) is impossible.

Just having a dish does not access every satellite channel in the world. You can only receive what is being pumped out through a footprint directed at OZ.
The lyngsat.com website is an excellent site to check.

Read the FTA forums around to see what people are getting. Find a satellite setup guide and learn. Please do searchs for your questions first. The answers you'll ask are extremely common and are not hard to find.

    Good Luck

You will need to ask your friend what these good FTA channels are so that you know where to point the dish. I cant say there are to many good FTA channels on KU Band satellite , most require bigger C Band dishes.

As Saintaholic mentioned , if you dont have a motor you cant move the dish between satellites without getting on the roof and doing it manually so it is best to find out what satellite your mate is referring to.

Agila is at 146E. So you might think it's possible to receive? Wrong. The footprint from that provider is not directed to Oz. You'll have to check the 'maps' of the satellite signals you hope to get and see if they are pointed to Melbourne.

My reference to 'high' is a type of LNB you've got. You can get 'low' (10,600) and a Universal which is low and high combined. Again, each provider sends a signal at a defined freq. Your LNB is only capable of receiving what is defined in that range.

There are 3 satallites you will be unable to receive with a 'high' lnb. I701 KU, Measat2 and Nss6. These signals are possible to be picked up in Melb but not with a 'high' LNB. Universals are the way to go and cost the same as a standard LNB.

Consider getting a motor for your dish. Cost is around $100

He is talking about a Universal LNB.

, , or take your chances on Ebay.

I am on the Morningtom Peninsula and can receive NSS6 , so you shouldnt have a problem unless you have an obstacle in the way. The dish has to point very low to get it and sometimes houses or trees will be a problem.

You cant receive cband with your dish. I'm guessing that you may struggle to get NSS6. Why do you want NSS6. Check the maps!! Just because you see some channels on the KU does not mean you'll ever get them in OZ. There's bugger all on NSS6 for you to get anyway. Stick with D2, C1 and D1. Get either one first. Learn, understand and then decide which way you want to go. You can waste a lot of money on stuff before you even get a signal. Get your card, dish, Learn to set it up. Learn to input freq etc. Read forums. READ MAPS!!

He shouldnt have a problem getting NSS6 unless he has an obstacle in the way. It was booming in at my location ( which isnt that far from his as he has stated he is in Melbourne ) last time I had a dish aimed at it , though an 80 cm would be preferable. But it was coming in at almost full strength on an 80 , so there shouldnt be a problem with a 65.

Do not make requests for items such as what I just removed from your post.
If people are giving you different answeres from different websites , I would suggest just posting on one and listening to one.
