    Default VAST security/ encryption measures

    Here is an abbreviated list from the authored by the Digital Switchover Taskforce.

    Set Top Box Minimum Specification
    A Set Top Box must:
    for the Conditional Access System:
    • support an embedded IRDETO KMS Conditional Access System consisting of softcell version 3 within the Set Top Box; and
    • support IRDETO Smart Card version 5 or higher conforming to ISO7816;
    • include a secure boot to prevent the loader and hence the application being replaced;
    pairing of smartcard and set top box so that a set top box will only work with a unique smartcard and vice versa;
    • include control word encryption to protect the control word delivery between the smartcard and the paired MPEG chip;
    • support a unique identity so that only authorised set top boxes can work in the operator’s network;
    What the hell is going on here?

    Tighter security measures than Selectv and other PayTV providers.

    There is zero hope of third party boxes ever working!

    Good question. With an attitude like that, I wont be too sad if their system gets compromised at some stage.

    OK - they've locked up the UEC decoders so Sat enthusiasts can't use them for other FTA services, restricted the encryption so we can't use the cards in another receiver, outlayed heaps in buying up satellite spectrum/upgrading the digital capacity of unprofitable remote area broadcasters and apparently colluded in the awarding the contract for compliant set top boxes.

    To top it all off, the subscriber base is limited to a couple of hundred homes in and around the Mildura viewing area (and a bit later on, to another couple of hundred in some regional SA backwater) while the rest of us wait until 2013................yeh you got it.....another costly, wasteful, inefficient and overregulated Federal Government screw up.

    Having the name Conroy associated with it should have been a clue. He will probably want to filter it as well

    Have you seen what's on FTA these days? Who the hell is going to put the effort into breaking it if that's all they are going to get out of it. Kinda like getting a blow job from a cheese grater. I'm sure with enough persistence it could be done, but why would you want to?!

    Thought you must have tried
    But I agree, why waste time breaking something that is free, unless you like the intellectual challenge?
