Ok, I’ve been running an Acer Aspire 3692WLMi for a few years now, I’ve been very careful not to load junk on it, and I have my list of trusted application and don’t use it to experiment with new programmes much.
It’s running Windows XP SP2, with all the updates. Norton’s Anti Virus, SpyBot Resident.
It had been fine for ages, but lately (ever since I got a really fast internet connection interestinglt enough) it’s been starting to slow. Long boot ups, slow web page operation, slow application opening etc etc…..
I used to just wipe the whole system and re ghost it with a bare bones install and it would fly again, well that’s what I do with my PC’s anyway. But I’m not sure I want to do this with the laptop.
Are there any programmes that can actually help this problem?
Do those Reg Cleaners actually do anything?
Is deleting all you Internet cache a good idea to speed things up?
Or is there some basic house keeping skills i should attend to?
Thanks for any help

Thanks Phill, i'll try it.
Just another point, because as it starts getting slow, i give the laptop a whole reboot, which seems to speed things for a day or so, then after a while things slowely get back to being slowish again
I downloaded that Kaspersky Internet Security "Anti Virus", but i haven't used it, i figure i don't have a Virus problem, just too much being handled by the CPU or too many Registry lines?? Not sure, i'm really not an expert here at all
how much ram do you have and how big is the hard drive ??
Tagg
Laptop Specs:
Intel Celeron M processor 420 (1.6 Ghz, 533 Mhz FSB, 1Mn L2 cache)
60gig HHD
512Mb DDR RAM (support dual-channel)
Cheers
i think windows has a permanant memory leak.
its enevitable it gets slower.
cleaning up helps, ccleaner has a reg cleaner also in it,
i find it safe to kill anything it finds
cant ever beat a format and clean install for speed though.

Wow, that ccleaner finds HEAPS!!!!
It also said my Laptop was a Intel Celeron 1.75Mhz, 502MB RAM, Mobile Intel 945GM Express Chipset Family. WooHoo, more than the sticker on the PC said
lol
did you run the registry bit as well?

Run them both Phil, got rid of 608MB Temps etc.
First boot after that took forever, Doh! Plus a few pop-up screens during boot complaining of missing bits and peices. Seems to have sorted itself out though...
Just have to remember all my log in details for various sites now....
Can't say i've seen any difference in speed or apps opening faster or alike
Right, a very big Thank You to PhillTheQuad.
Using that ccleaner in analyse mode, I found that Windows was downloading a 19.8Mb Windows Messenger Live programme and not installing it. Every time I rebooted it would download 19.8Mb and hold it in the Temp folder, yet not install it.
This "Windows has a newer version of MSN" window had been popping up every time I logged on, yet when I click on it, it would never install.
Thanks to that ccleaner, I found the problem and the folder it was contained in.
After a manual install, all is well again..... Apart from Microsoft trying to jammed shit down ya throat
