Default Best Laptop for cam programming

    Hi all
Sorry if this is in the wrong section. Feel free to move.
I am looking at buying a Laptop with a PCMCIA slot to accept a cam. Any advice on what model or make. Having trouble with card slots.
Any suggestions? Or can you get external cams slots? ie USB?

    Thanks

Most new Lappy's dont have PCMICA slot, they have Express Card slot's
Most programs for programmimg CAMS were written for Win98

So best would be a old laptop

not really unless you want a scungy old lappie, you could simply use a program like virtualpc or vmware to have a virtual Win98 install. If virtualisation doesnt, work, create a 3gb or so partition and set up a dual boot into win98. All you need is a win98, which are pretty easy to come by if you dont have one already.

Your having trouble with card slots so your wanting to put a cam into a laptops pcmcia slot. How is that going to help your cards not working in the card slots? I think you might be wanting to look into running a phoenix off a serial port instead but I may be wrong.
What would you do if your server was stolen or failed beyond repair?

Actually there are lots of laptops with serial ports out there. I just bought a new one myself that has serial on it.

Thanks for the replies. I forgot to activate replies. I didn't explain myself properly in the OP. What I meant to say was that I'm trying to revive a dead cam so the card question was irrelevant (blame typing wife) Any how did pick up an old Toshiba on Ebay, waiting for it to arrive.

    Cheers

When you say a dead cam, what does the cam do or not do and what type of cam is it?

Yep me too... I have to take my laptop around and sometimes update receivers or satellite and channel updates on the fly. Beats scan and move delete rename anyday

lolz...nuthin like using 1970s tech to keep it real Any serial device should come with a free set of flared pants and fake sideburns ...

same goes for IR, ugh (Tesla thought of it in the late 1800s IIRC)

anyway, plenty of CAS devices that are usb/firewire happy.

    but, whatever works!

I didn't know you can repair CAM using laptop. What program can be used for that and does it give the same functionality as CAS2 or CAS3 ones?

OK The cam came with a second hand Extreme combo unit. It is a blue and white irdeto no- 900264. Does nothing in the Extreme. Placed in Strong works with Goldie no probs, looks like Extreme dead.

Wanted Laptop to Freecam and hopefully use T18 card also, and I do remember wearing Flares

Fair enough. They are getting pretty long in the tooth now those 2.06 cams but they are still a good cam whilst they are working. Good luck freecam'ing it, and if you kill it, send it to me, I can fix them from a bad flash.
