    Default Can't open com3 port

    Hi
Not sure if this is in the right section but we recently bought a 2nd hand laptop but I can't get it on to the internet (dial up) as it says that Com3 is being used by something else (Error 633) Does anyone know what or how I can check to find out what the problem is? I have reloaded the modem drivers, looked in Task Manager and the Device Manager but can't see any conflicts or other devices being used. OS is XP Pro. Laptop is a Toshiba A10
    Any suggestions?

internal or onboard modems seem to require comm 3 or 4, right click my computer/properties/device manager/ports(comm and lpt) comm ports can be added and played with in here, as to your specific machine its near on impossible to pin down from afar, solution get an isp on broadband that supplies a free router on hookup and go surfing

I wish we could Anyone but we can't get Broadband where we are. It is so frustrating.
Thanks for your help. I will try the ports again but only the printer/LPT port is visible from the Device Manager.

Right click on your modem in device manager and select properties. It's been so long it's in there somewhere that's where it gives you the option to change the comport.

If no Serial ports are visible try to add new hardware scan. If that fails, you might have a dodgy modem in your lappy.

Hi tjd443, com3 fault probably due to a setting in your Antivirus program. Trend(PC-Cillin) causes this problem on some of our work laptops.

the symptom described is common for a toshiba internal software modem that has had a spike destroy it.

Find it in a little panel underneath the machine and it will be held down with a very fine philips screw which strips real easy.

pm me the part number and i will see if i have one for you.

Thanks for the helpful replies. I will have a fiddle with it and see what happens.
Bit OT, z80 is it possible to swap the card slot in an A10 to a PCMCIA slot say from a 4600? We bought the A10 being misinformed that it had a PCMCIA slot.
    Any suggestions?

    Cheers

Okay I have been having a fiddle and opened up the hidden services in the Device Manager. What is the Remote Access Auto Connection? Or for that matter could any of the hidden service drivers be blocking the modem?
I did try changing the port to Com4 but when I query modem I still get the same message that it can't open it cause something else is using it.
Maybe the modem has gone ca-put!
Before I pull it apart is there any of those drivers that I should try stopping to see if it works?

    Cheers

As I said, remove the modem physically as a test.

Antivirus or Firewall is "using" blocking the service.
