    Default NBN speed

    Hi,

I'm not to knowledgeable on internet speed speak etc, and ask for some information in laymans terms.

I just looked at the NBN maps today, and see I am outside the cable area.

I will be in the satellite of fixed wireless areas.

When I read what speeds will be available, I note this information.

    Cable...25-100 Mpbs
    Fixed Wireless...12 Mpbs
    Satellite...supposedly the same as Wireless...12Mpbs

So, seeing I am on regional adsl1 now, on a 1500/256 plan (adsl2 not avaiable), could some kind soul approximate for me, how fast 12Mpbs is, as compared to 1500/256?

Many thanks to those that will help with the answer.

1500 is 1.5 meg (in an ideal world) never do they reach that.... nor would I believe that 12M is actually 12 M...

so (theoretically) 12M is (say) 12x faster than what you have. (grain of salt BUT) as they measure M as 1000 not 1024...

i think thats right.....???? (sorry drinking before I go out) never good!... plus my maths is always shocking...

edit: upload speed is very important for some things... the higher(speed) and cheaper (cost) the better...plus if it counts against your quota....

Well on your 1500/256 plan now you can download at 150KB/s flat out.
On a 12MB connection your download speed should be around 1200KB/s, So you'll get about 8x faster internet

And it's Megabits (lower case b), not MegaBytes. Hence divide by 8 (bits in a byte). After you factor in network overheads, you end up with a speed that is pretty close to 1500Mbs or whatever speed it is.

I have never seen the NBN maps but I was in Satelitte only 2 years ago although I know now wireless does cover the area in a fashion.
I wont be too surprised to see that NBN wont be available to me here any time soon.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

NBN not much use here. Here's a small SA country exchange about 450 phone no's currently we've got adsl1 for all but about 25 no's gestimate i've got 1.5m can get 8m so wireless up to 12m isn't much of a improvement. It would be better if the govt upgraded the exchange to adsl2 and made it available to all isps, it would be faster and cheaper than wireless. Some of the subscribers who can't get adsl have got wireless already.

His existing 1500 (1.5Mbits) versus 12Mbits. Therefore 8 times faster.

Anything else muddies the water somewhat.

I think the 5 was a typo - should have been 100Mb/s - wasn't really referring to that example.
    But your right.

In other news, i just realised that my folks are now considered to be in 'Zone 1 (Metro)' rofl and ADSL2 is now available to them.

i switched to the big T as they could give me adsl2 where as iinet only provide adsl1 at my exchange(small town), so from 1.5 to 18, if your not with T and you live in a small town try and see if T can hook you up at better speeds, this is not an endorsment for them as i worked for them and cant stand the office, but for the same price i got a increased speed plus extra limit

Users seem to have commented about dl speeds... but your upload speed will be the biggest change for your as I understand it you'll be looking at up to 12/12. You're currently on 1.5/.256 (roughly).

The change will be very noticeable for you because the rate of upload has a big impact on performance from that speed from my experience.

Just as long as the Ping time gets a big boost too, then I will be a happy camper LOL

ping time v's slow dsl will improve by ~ 30 ms I would expect. But in TAS it might be even higher than that for some ppl. Will be interesting to see stats coming out over time.

There are now other ISPs providing ADSL2+ on Telstra DSLAMs (the regional ones like yours), the ones I know of are:
Internode (announced about 2 days ago)
    TPG
    Dodo
and a couple of smaller ISPs I've never heard of before.

Entering your number at whirlpool.net.au will give you a good idea of what's available at your exchange.

This is a fairly accurate indication, however wireless tends to have more overhead (we know you never get full speed from a WiFi connection) 6-7 times might be a better number.

guys,it wouldnt matter if there was 1 to 2 satellites upthere for broadband its still no where faster than this nbn . telstra charging line rental on lines decades old as far as im concerned line rental should be abolished. in the 1980s i got my fixed line cost me $185.00 now when the nbn comes in and telstra is supposed to going to rip up all there copper lines where they go to to charge people then for the loss in revenue when all that copper wire gets ripped out ,if they can bring boats here and pay them for being here $470pw plus three mobile phones laptops ,foxtel etc plus alot of them free accomodation in 5 star motels at tax payers expense ,also earlier this year a certain satellite company billed the federal government fotr $14000 thats for 5 satellite 3 metre dishes and 12 to 14 satellite receivers to be shipped to curtin detention centre wato be installed probably so the boat people can watch whatever channels they like and get free foxtel at the same time .,anyone that can tell me how is that right they come with no id passports anything and they still let them into the country my god australia is becoming a haven for lots of people like that and it should be stopped .thanks hamguy2 nsw.
