Want to share folders on Vista and be able to be seen an an XP PC. Simple, grrr!!! Have issues....
Setup shared folders on Vista, XP cannot see them when browsing network, the Vista PC does not come up in the network list. They are on the same WORKGROUP.
XP can ping Vista, but Vista cannot ping XP!!!!
The shared folders are shared and full access for all users.
If I put in the name, ie \\laptop\docs, tries to cconnect and says access denied or something like that.
Setup shared printer on Vista, XP CAN see it and print to it.
Wot am I doing wrong ????
Look Here -> |
you need to disable the firewall first
then check all your network settings on both pc's
then click on the network icon near the clock then click network and sharing center
=Network And Center=
this is what should be on
Network Discovery: on
File Sharing : on
and the printer sharing if you have the printer on the vista pc
now you might need to do a restart
Now at the top there is your PC(this computer) -----Network ------internet
click on the "network"
now you should see all the pc's that is on the network and your router
your XP PC should be there ? now what I done was right click on it and create shortcut (it puts a shortcut on the desktop)
click on your pc and check that the folder or folders that you are sharing is in it
I have herd that the Mcafee can course networking problems
Now it sounds like the problem is with XP have you got a firewall on it
DND
Have confirmed all the above, all sharing was on, private network etc. Have turned off both firewalls, and both pcs are still in the same workgroup. When i go into Network and Sharing, view full map, doesnt show any other computers now, ie the XP PC. Try to ping the XP PC, still cant, ping the Vista PC from XP no probs.
Im tearing my hair out. If I try to view the PC's in the WORKGROUP workgroup, by browsing, on either the other PC does not come up!!!!
Also if I tracert from Vista to XP, it resolves the PC name OK, but fails.
Cheers

Simple solution, replace Vista machine or both with a Mac no more problems.
Have installed Network Magic on both Vista and XP. The Vista PC sees shares on the XP machine but will not connect to them, says likely a firewall issue, even if I have both on or off, makes no difference. The XP PC sees none of the Vista shares !!!! Grrr!!!!!!!!
Also wondering why only the Vista PC shows up in the WORKGROUP, when browsing the network. The XP machine does not show up at all.
Not that I am helping you at all, when my laptop was Vista it could see and use all network shares on my home XP network. I was surprised it worked so easily and discovered all the shares quickly.
Microsoft was a good technet article here...
maybe you need to start again
I've set up a network with Vista and XP computers. Everything works apart from one thing.
When you try access the Vista machine from an XP machine, it just keeps saying you don't have the right to access this system or something like that.
Funny thing is I tried everything and was never able to get xp to access files on the VIsta machine.
With mine all the computers show up in the network groups, and vista has no problem accessing XP and the xp machines have no problem with each other. It's just they can not access the Vista machine. I've got user controls turned off, no pass on the shared HDD, but it just won't work.
YOu problem is a little different, but it seems everyone seems to have differnt issues when it comes to vista. They don't seem unified.. lol

That M$ article i have read before inside and out, made no difference as I have already done wot they said.

Good Article in I think it was APC magazine..Page 104. April 2008.
I dont know if Im allowed to scan and insert a PDF in here for ya..
It Does mention if having issues to install LLTD responder KB922120
Thanks mutanti,
have already installed the LLTD thingamajiggy, that allows the PC to be discovered over the network, i think just in the Vista network map though, still cant get them to appear on each pc when viewing the network thru explorer.
Cheers
PS Mate, would luv a copy of the APC article
I'll Leave the Link up till you have it then take it down.
Usually I find most networking issues are caused by anti virus & Firewall programs
Cheers
Mutanti
uninstall it and problem will most likely be solved..
YES and also with Norton..
Never seen any issues with AVG.
Have seen issues with CA when Firewall installed.
Other various Anti virus programs give various issues.
