Well it's apparently running Mio natively so that's much better than most of the cheapies.
Navteq Version 7 maps.
Mio normally = Sensis.
Interesting.
If it's a WinCe 5.0 OS then it's a snap.
It looks like Mio3.3 but i cant see the arrow for the cockpit, it has the bluetooth icon but it doesnt say it has bluetooth
I am thinking of buying one myself.Aldi had one for sale before.Anybody got one? and how good are they?
Yeah I wonder how they compare to the deal extreme GPS units for similar money? I would also like to know if the maps and software can be changed around for say TomTom etc??
Simon.
Hi guys,
Brand new member, but long time lurker, and love the site!!!
Bought 1 of those Tevion GPS units from Aldi this morning.
just a few things:
1. Advertisement shows screencap of Mio - unit actually has Route66. (with Navteq Q2 2007 Maps)
2. Advertisement states 512Mb Ram - Box says 128Mb Ram - Unit reports 64Mb Ram ??
3. Unit is running Windows CE 5.0.
4. No Bluetooth support
Have phoned Aldi this morning Re: false advertising concerns...awaiting response.
Just thought you'd all like to know

Bummer , Route66 is crap
It sounds like it may be possible to install Tomtom or iGo ( Mio ) on it though. Does it have an actual Windows desktop type screen Brian , or some sort of custom software ?
Welcome to the site as well

Does it have an SD card slot ?
Hi Sanity,
thanks for the welcome mate!!
Doesn't have a windows desktop screen as such, more like a custom main menu screen.
shows icons for: Navigation, Music, Photo, Ebook, Video & System.
Can't find a way yet to access the windows CE Desktop.
Yes it has a SD slot on the left side, so it may be possible to install other software.
Route66 7 seems to be intalled to a folder called "Resident Flash" and theres a Shell.exe in that folder, so i couldn't see why you couldn't install TomTom or Mio on it i guess.
Might have to have a bit of a play with it, i also hate Route66!! LOL!

which is the way to go.
the deal extreme or aldi ??????????????????
Can you post some snapshots of the main screen? The icons you describe sounds exactly like the DX GPS. By the way, how did you work out that it is Win CE5? Also what is the size of the SD card?
Also look at the Navsoon forum where there is a thread in the Navgo sys885 forum on how to hack the DX unit. One way to do it for the DX unit extremely easily is to connect it up to a PC running windows which should get Microsoft Activesync activated. Then running a program called "XXX(name escapes me for the moment but it allows remote access to the WinCE registry)", naviigate to HK_Local_Machine on the unit's registry. Under init, there is a key called Launch50 - change the contents of that key from yfloader.exe (maybe it would be shell.exe for the Aldi unit) to explorer.exe. Do a soft reboot then a hard reboot and that should take you to the Wince menu
Hi all,
Well i'm happy to report that both Mio & IGo both worked flawlessly on this unit!!
I followed szir's suggestion (THX Mate!!) and hooked it up to my PC, after installing ActiveSync, and installed them both on my old SD card, (which didn't come with the unit ) and both fired up and got great sat reception first go!!
Now all i have to do is find another software besides Route66 that runs Navteq maps...I Hate Route66
I haven't delved into the registry as suggested by szir yet...but i've only had it a few hours!!!
I'll report back with more findings as i continue testing!!

PS. Szir, sorry forgot to answer your WinCE 5.0 question...it's got a winCE 5.0 sticker with a serial No. on the back!! LOL
Cheers
Brian
Hi again guys!!
On the upside for you guys, you will be able to buy one of these units tomorrow at Aldi, but trust me, get up there early, they sold out in 25 minutes up here today!!
I got mine early because it's a show holiday up here tomorrow!!
Just in case anyone was wondering!!! LOL

After installing the GPS software via Microsoft Activesynch, how did you then access them ?(IGo and Miomap) from the unit??
And also did you check the size of the SD card??
Sounds like this is the perfect alternative to people who do not want to deal with DX
You access the programs by changing the shell.ini file on the sd card to point to your desired program.
EG. \sdmmc\TomTom_C220\TomTom.exe
What is wrong with DX?
I ordered mine from them and had no probs.
Hi Guys,
Yeah...Urin8r hit the nail right on the head!!
But I actually renamed and replaced the Shell.ini with the one from the new softwares
zip file. (with some minor modification to point it to the SD Card)
Szir...it didn't come with an SD card, I had a 1Gb card here from my older Navman P.O.S.!!! (It might pay to get one, unless you want to
delete the Route66 software from that "ResidentFlash" folder)
Just loaded it up and slipped it into the port, and changed that "Shell.ini"!!

Nothing wrong with dealing with DX. It is just that some people prefer to hold the product in the hand before committing to a purchase...
Looks like definitely a DX clone. Would definitely be a good buy
