I did a conversion recently and have to say that with the price at between 60 and 70 cents it has become a marginal benefit.
And that is considering the subsidy.
The installers are ripping us off because there is a subsidy.
According to Sky News this morning , the Federal Government LPG subsidy on installations is likely to be scrapped by the Rudd Government.
Do you think this leaves any good reason to convert to LPG ? Prices down my way are about 70 cents a litre and although petrol is expensive , most cars are generally a lot more fuel efficient on petrol than LPG.
Any thoughts ? I think this is really going to hurt the LPG industry if it happens. Without the subsidy , it would take a lot of driving to make it worthwhile on savings. Although I have always had at least one car on LPG for the last 10 years ( or longer ) , I now own petrol only cars as I think the price per litre is absolutely criminal , and the cars I have are pretty fuel efficient.

Maybe......but I am sure most people are better off with the subsidy than paying the amount out of their own pocket.
I just cant see LPG being worthwhile now with the recent massive price hikes. The jump since I last had an LPG vehicle is unbelievable.
I work in the fuel retail industry and one of the things to come out of the subisdy in Perth at least is what I perceive to be rushed and shoddy installs. So many people at our sites cannot get the lpg in their tanks or struggle because of poor connections between the pump and the tank. A regular customer of mine has to remove the petrol cap to fit the lpg on because the lpg fill is too close to the petrol fill. These problems have become quite common around all sites and they haven't previously been a problem up until the last 1 or 2 years.
The price is shocking too, I think that medium term the gap between lpg and ulp will increase however.
I think WA has an extra state subsidy as well doesnt it ? Or am I wrong ?
It might keep more interest than in other states if it does.
What are the LPG prices in other states ? I am in Vic and saw it as high as 70 cents recently , which is the highest I have ever seen it. Do any other states have it substantially cheaper ?
The state govt here gives up to $1000. Its about 66-67cpl here today. I know advisors to the fed govt are talking about bringing in fuelwatch on a national basis, I think it works well here. One price change at 6am every day, all prices for the next day on the net at 3pm. Makes my job easier anyway
I'm in country WA with a LPG price of $105.9 per litre. I was lucky to purchase my car with a near factory gas installation. One thing I have to mention is, I don't know if its the change of climate, or we are just getting crappy gas, but my economy running on gas has fallen by around 100kms per tank, from what I was getting in Perth a few months ago.
The price of LPG is an absolute rip off, but as I understand, its going up a fair bit more yet.
Well just filled up the Mrs ford with lpg for $38.
Still worth while to me at this moment.
Lpg installs are a total ripoff at the moment, i paid 1/3 of the going price today in 2000.
Gas was 34 cents a litre back then at most, 25cents was more the norm.
Takeing away the subsities will be doing me a favor. Hopefully they wont start taxing the shit out of gas with not enough cars converted, but knowing the govenment and my luck they probably will.

the average LPG install on a 4 or 6 cylinder car in WA should be around $3200 -$3400 depending on what you want but even this i feel is to expensive ..under bonnet kits are about $750. tank around $650. extras like pipe work filler valves etc $180. labour time is around 8 to 9 hours per conversion. underbody installs around $200 more
this is a opinion from a old installer who has done more then 2780 installs over the last 30 years.....mind you while people are getting the subsidy installers will up the price...i think that if this goes then install prices will drop by $400 or $500!!!!!
They government will end up scrapping the LPG subsidy for installations and will the LPG fuel prices come down to compensate, my gut feeling says no.The motorist will get ripped off again.
I agree , motorists will get ripped off either way. There is no winning in this country at the moment when it comes to mortgages and fuel prices
Something dont quite add up.
Gas is 70c in melb, 105c in country WA, 35c diffrence. 50% more actually.
Petrol is $1.40 approx in Melb and what, add 55cents to the price of the petrol or the gas?
Add it to the petrol and its $1.95 a litre? Are you kidding me?
Add it to the gas price and its $1.60 a litre, only 20 cents more than in Melbourne. 20 cents more for petrol would translate to gas being worth 10 cents a litre extra than Melbourne.
Why is gas so expensive in WA? Transport costs? It should be 80, oh heck say even 85 cents a litre at most, but not $1.05.
I find the current prices for fuel in Melbourne hard to comprehend, how on earth do you poor buggers afford to run a car in outer WA?
Sorry to make you all jealous but it's costing me only 15 cents per litre to fuel up my car. WVO is the go
Adobe.
$3.50 a litre in the UK at the moment. (160p)
at times peaking at $4 a litre.
