A number here have this free ''give away' Acer, and although it's a very long shot I wonder if there is another CPU that could give this old girl a little more zing?
It's had a 2Gb ram injection and a HD upgrade and trundles along just fine with W7 Pro on all the basics.
I am no expert, however I understand most lappy CPU upgrades are nigh on impossible (sockets, heatsinks, FSB's etc etc).
Anyway here are the specs from SIW.

dont say linux if i wanted it id install it
eBay seem cheap and available.
So who's going to give it a whirl first?
just brought a t5550 for $40 , so we will see how it goes!
This is not a bad guide for most laptop CPUs
Thanks Crazy quiet a few options there for the chipset in these units

So are these Core 2 D's the most likely to give the best bang for buck (if they work)?

going by the chipset GL960 if they are correct them my 5620 is running the Core 2 Duo T7300 and its does well
Note on the GL960
08/12/07
As of this update, the GL960 only has official support for Socket P Celerons. Manufacturers, however, have been shipping the GL960 with Socket P Pentium Dual-Cores. The GL960 will certainly work with the following processors:
Celeron M 530 1733 1024 533
Celeron M 540 1866 1024 533
Celeron M 550 2000 1024 533
Celeron M 560 2133 1024 533
Pentium Dual-Core T2310 1466 1024 533
Pentium Dual-Core T2330 1600 1024 533
Pentium Dual-Core T2370 1733 1024 533
As of this update, several board members have reported successful uprades to 667MHz FSB and 800MHz FSB Socket P Core 2 Duos and none have reported unsuccessful upgrades. The GL960 will probably work with the following processors:
Core 2 Duo T5250 1500 2048 667
Core 2 Duo T5450 1667 2048 667
Core 2 Duo T5550 1833 2048 667
Core 2 Duo T5750 2000 2048 667
Core 2 Duo T5850 2133 2048 667
Core 2 Duo T5270 1400 2048 800
Core 2 Duo T5470 1600 2048 800
Core 2 Duo T7100 1800 2048 800
Core 2 Duo T7250 2000 2048 800
Core 2 Duo T7300 2000 4096 800
Core 2 Duo T7500 2200 4096 800
Core 2 Duo T7700 2400 4096 800
Core 2 Duo T7800 2600 4096 800

Ta,
I missed that summary. Apparently it may well manage fsb's to 800!!!
Now that would breathe very considerable life into the old girl.
TravelMate 5720/5320 Series Extensa 5620/5220 Series (28.7Mb)
It does look like a pretty straightforward CPU change-out.
Clean up the heatsink, ... and good to go?

Ordered a T5750 (2MHz C2D) for A$50.24 delivered.
Well the t5550 came today from uk, 20 mins later and a bit of thermal compound we are up and running again.
speed seems a lot better. not so sluggish in flash pages - upped the processor score to 4.8 from 4.1 in vista.
Well worth the $40 !!
Now to see if anyone tries an 800 fsb upgrade
Nice
not a full list, but gives a bit of an idea how the different cpus benchmark against each other

from 496(c540) to 1001(t5550) in my case is a fair jump!
interesting that the t7100 800 with faster bus scores slower than t5550 with 667

Finally did the job with the new T5750 (2MHz Core 2 Duo). All this rain has me catching up on inside jobs
Was it worth $50 and 10 minutes changeover? You betcha!
It slips along just that much quicker now. Proggies open in the blink of an eye!
WEI Processor and RAM scores up from 4.2 -> 5.1 & 4.5 -> 5.1 respectively.
That's a 21% increase in CPU speed alone, plus C2D.

Couple of pics of the extraction. Very straight forward with only a few little dabs of heatsink compound required.
Fan removed
New CPU installed Note the white compound. Heat sink assembly on the left upside down.
