win 7 Hibernate or sleep problem
Hi all,
Just needing a little help I'm stumped. I've just rebuild my computer with windows 7 if it's just sitting not doing anything it will go into either Hibernate/Sleep mode by itself. The screen goes blank and harddrive is going flat out. I've turned off the scrensaver and created a custom power plan with it set to never turn off display and never go to sleep but it still does. Has anyone seen this problem before and know how to stop it from happening.

Hi Mick,
Check your bios settings, look under power management I think and see what its set to ? S1 or S3
Then try and google and find articles like this
Cheers

S1- CPU Stopped
In this state, your PC is technically in standby and this is the default standby state if S3 is not supported. Power consumption is Five Watts to Thirty Watts of Power.
S3 - Suspend to RAM (context saved to RAM)..... Normaly used
In this state, your PC is in standby and all fans, hard drivers and other devices are powered down into a sleep state. Power consumption is less than Five Watts.
S4 - Suspend to Disk(Context saved to HDD)
Otherwise known as Hibernate, your PC has saved the contents of RAM to the hard disk and is pretty much tuned off. Power consumption is less than Five Watts. This isn’t very useful for desktop PC's and is mostly used in Laptops where battery drainage is far less than if you are in S3.

Thanks everyone I went into bios it had 3 options s1 s3 or auto. It was set on auto and I changed to s3 hasn't gone off yet. The strange thing is this computer had win 7 on it before and never had to change setting in bios maybe its just another problem with win 7 64 bit.

I'm running win7 64bit no problem
Its Window 7 "Vista" and thats the problem ...LOL
Ok I have still been having problems with the computer going into standby whilst not being used. I've changed settings in bios and changed various power options in windows settings but still the same. But I stumbled onto a small app called Insomnia that stops windows 7 from going into standby whilst it's running. You just start the app then minimize to taskbar. This has fixed the problem. I've uploaded it for anyone else having this problem.

No problems here with that problem. BUT...it did take quite a bit of fiddling.
Click on the power icon in your bottom right corner and select " More Power Options ".
It will open the control panel power settings page. Select whatever power plan you want to use and then click on " Change Plan Settings ".
This opens another page with setting to turn off the display and sleep. Set them how you want them , then click on " Change Adavanced Power settings ".
Click on the little + icons to open up other options. There are lots of them and you need to set them how you want them. Check the Hard Disk option, it is usually sett to turn HD off after 20 minutes.

Open the Start Menu.
Type cmd
Right click cmd.
Select Run as administrator.
To turn hibernation off type the following “powercfg -h off” without the quotes.
