    Default Cable or sat

    i have both a dm 500 and a dm 600 (600 is sat 500 is cable)

I have gone down the coast and they have foxtel here. I would like to use my optus service card here as i have all the channels i like on it and they only have basic package. I believe it may be cable they have here as with the dm500 i can pick up the data channel but nothing else is coming up at all. i can see at the bottom what should be on eg stargate SG1 or whatever. I have an optus featuring foxtel card that is set up with the box. this works at home with our optus cable and foxtel sat.

What would i need to do to get it working?

can you use the optus card on the foxtel cable network (i am assuming they are just using optus cable)

Should i try the sat reciever? this is a set of units so i am not sure what that would do to the other recievers if it is cable.

I have also tried a transponder scan using 00626Mhz

    Regards

*If* the Optus cable card is actually a Foxtel NDS card ( never seen one and dont know how they work ), it should work for Foxtel satellite as well in a satellite receiver such as a DM500.

I believe it is (has NDS on it) and it works with satellite as i use it with that all the time.

My concern is if all the other boxes in the complex are foxtel cable and i stick a sat receiver in would that cause damage?

    should i just try it?

I'd suggest finding out which system (cable/satellite) is installed first.

    Ask other occupants/building management/Foxtel.

A satellite decoder sends voltage up the coax, assuming there's an LNB/multiswitch on the other end.

Cable-Foxtel/Optus decoders don't output a voltage, so there is potential fror a satellite decoder to cause issues on a cable distribution network, although I suspect there would be voltage-blocking circuitry to prevent damage.

If you have a satellite decoder, it won't work on a cable system anyway.

Is there a way to find out from the box that is installed there currently?

    the box is a DC420NF

My cable dreambox can say what is on each channel but wont display anything even with the card in.

Not sure what the go is.

    Regards

    G'Day Cobber,
This should answer your question. It's a cable installation and the Sat box wont work.

    Assuming it's a Pace DC420NF, then that's a cable box.

Hi, yes the box is a pace. so in this case the DM500c should be working with the Optus NDS card so i must have the transponder frequency wrong when doing a scan. what do i need to know about doing a scan on the foxtel cable setup using a DM500C?

There is a Foxtel transponder ini file available.

Optus/Foxtel transponders are identical. And the NDS card should work regardless of whether it's Cable or Satellite. You just can't use a Cable STB on a Satellite connection and vice versa. They operate on different frequencies.

I'm a big proponent of not using stb's at all and going with HTPC systems. Much more versatile.

The DirecTV DVR, to my knowlege, is better than most cable DVRs. Cable does generally have full resolution HD, and has quite a few channels, since they can employ bandwith utilization, using switched video. However, the provider DVRs, while they somewhat wor, leave something to be desired. You can though, use a TiVo HD or TiVo Premire with cable, to DVR in full HD, and access online content services in lieu of VOD from the provider.
