Default Anyone able to pick up ASIASAT 5 from Melbourne?

    Hi guys,

Can someone from Melbourne please confirm if they are able to pick up ASIASAT 5. In particular, I'm only really interested in the two free to air Russian channels, namely RTR planeta and Perviy Kanal Asia (see ).

Any help would be much appreciated as I haven't been able to find any recent posts on this topic. The older posts dating back to 2009 seem to suggest that people were having issues picking up Perviy Kanal Asia.

Just wanted to confirm that these channels are working before I buy any of the hardware.

    Thanks for your help.

    Regards,
    SteveFrench.

I know you can get the encryption Russian stuff on Ku on Asia sat 4. Need a subbie or a CS though.

    Hi gado,

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have noticed the Russian channels on Asiasat 4. ConnectTV seem to offer the subscription to this service here in Australia, however their subscription fees are quite ridiculous - we're talking $69/month for 4 channels (one of which is free to air and the other originating from Israel) or $84/month for 5 channels (the extra channel being another free to air channel available on Asiasat 5).

Perviy kanal and RTR Planeta are fta on Asiasat 5 on C band and can be reached in Melbourne with the aid of 2.3m mesh dish. - which is what I am using (perviy kanal was recently added in the last 6 weeks. ) I know that a 1.8 m solid will also do the job.

Go ahead and buy the hardware you will have no problems picking up those channels in Melbourne. I'm in the SE also using a 2.3 mesh dish.

Ahh excellent, thanks so much guys. I'm hoping to get this system setup as a Christmas present for the parents and I was wondering if anyone here could forward me the contact details of the company/person they used to install/sell them the hardware?

Also, has anyone here watched the programming on these two channels? At the moment, my parents are mostly renting Russian dvds from Balaclava near the city. I was wondering if you guys could tell me if you found the channels relatively entertaining to watch?

    Thanks again for your help.

    Regards,
    SteveFrench.

the wife watches perviy kanal mostly. RTR seems to have old old movies ,the news and some soapies.

perviy kanal shows some regular shows, soapies and some good movies late at night. pvr comes in handy for that.

Anyone in the Point Cook area or close by picking up AsiaSat 5? If so what kind of signal strength are you getting?

I'm sure there would be but the problem is the signal level measurements on a receiver are not accurate and vary between different brands. You need specialised equiptment to accurately make measurements. The best you could hope for would be someone with the same receiver using the same firmware version.

Asiasat 5 should be fine on dishes 1.8m and upwards preferably 2.3m. Some low power scpc feeds may need larger

Did you hook it up yourself or another tech done it? I am failing at getting signal for some reason. Pretty sure it is pointing the right way, elevation and skew i have played around will all day yesterday. So either I am doing it wrong or something is broken. Its not the coax or the stb as I hooked up a ku dish in about 5 mins pointing to optus d2 and all apples.

    Hi anicho,
Are you able to get AsiaSat 3S on 105.5E? AsiaSat 5 is just a tad lower and to the left of AsiaSat 3S. AsiaSat 5 puts in a huge signal so i am sure if you are using a 1.8m solid or a 2.3m mesh and upwards you should be able to hit this bird!
What is your elevation for AsiaSat 5 in Melbourne? Here in Perth - AsiaSat 5 is high to the North West at 49.3. Most importantly do you have good clearing to the lower North West in Melbourne?

To be honest I haven't been able to pick anything up yet, I have assumed it is just me lol

    I have a 2.3 mesh using these:
    Azimuth (magn.): 290.5°
    Elevation: 26.6°

From my backyard, if I look in the direction the dish is pointing I can't see anything at all that could be blocking it, pretty much just flat cleared land.

Why do people post such rubbish information. My stb is using less than 5m of coax from my AS5 dish. I tune dishes using less than 3m of coax normally unless it's a 3m dish or larger.

I really do not understand why people write such things as you have bitola.
