I had a copy of protel traxedit on my computer.
Went to use it today and it would not work.
Any one know where I can download a free copy of it.
(ps the one I had was a free copy but I cant remember where I obtained it)

Are there any tuition style videos around that show the basics in using such a program as Autotrax - how to set it up, how to operate the various tools and features etc?
I had a look at it once and couldn't work out how to get started!

    Protel is nightmare to me.
I mean, I need to have a life beyond PCB design
Those who are not dependent on using Protel might like to have look at Eagle.

It is free for most applications and very self explainatory.
Runs on Windows, Mac and Linux

    Thanks for that link Nomeat.

My requirements are fairly simple... I have a circuit diagram, not overly complex, and I wish to create a single sided, single layer board for it.
Not rocket science I would have thought. When I looked at Autotrax I just got horribly confused. It seems like you have to have an airline pilot's ticket to drive it!

The actual program is called PROTEL TRAXEDIT it is used for making PCB's.
the one from is for schematics.
I found the original floppy disk but as its a dos program it refuses to operate on both my computers.
I am wondering if some program I have installed is stopping it running.
Tried going to dos and running it from there but no joy.

    any thoughts.

also have their own free schematic capture and PCB cad program. It's perfect from prototyping and it's cheap and fast to have your boards manufactured.

Ok put the program on my old laptop (486) and program works fine.
    It use windows 2000.
All the other computers have XP pro.
Funny thing is it was working on XP a month ago.
Maybe a windows update has stopped it working.
    It is a DOS program

+1 for Eagle from me as well. Has great updated library support for components. I don't know anyone who is not using it now.
By reading this, you have already given me control over a tiny slice of your mind

Hello ppls, I'm afraid that I'm not very accustomed to these forums, but noticed a couple of ppls asking for assistance.

Well, the reason I'm here looking at protel autotrax is that a couple of days ago, my backup hard drive died, along with the motherboard.

Now, I have been using autotrax.....the original version since it first came out, and was using easytrax before that. (guess that makes me a technosaurus)

I love the old dos program, but it does have its little idiosyncrasies.
I have a backup copy of the program semi working, which I am happy to pass along, if and when I get it fully working, as well as a windows version on a cd.

As for advice, am also happy to pass along what I know.

Regarding the person, asking how to change the orientation of a component.... its simply move component (M) (C) then press the X or Y key to swap it in the x or y plane.

To convert easytrax files to autotrax edit the file in notepad and change the 5 in the first line of the file to a 4, then save the file...... dont change anything else.

Once the newer windows version came out I lost interest in it, (I reckon it needs a pilots ticket to run it,) although it is good for printing on a laser printer and can convert earlier files.

    Regards John

I emailed my local PCB manufacturer to ask about ExpressPCB files and this was their response:

"Perhaps the easiest for unusual packages is to print a positive and get it
1:1 photocopied in negative on clear film, or colour laser a negative onto
    clear film off your computer."

Obviously they don't support it yet.

I am going to have to get myself a copy of this program however as a contact has offered me a board design done in this very format.
