If any pins around the d2c chip are shorted together you can see that issue. I have had a couple brought to me that have had that done. Seen varying faults from wont take in the disk to disk goes in but wont spin up or the disk goes in and then ejects again. Havnt taken a lot of notice as to which shorted pins cause which fault though.
What would you do if your server was stolen or failed beyond repair?

i took teh chip out - cleaned everything up - and she works..

i suspect i shorted one of the FGCDEH vias (as i used a fibreglass pen to be able to solder to em)... will use the old fashioned blade next time

    Cheers cwispy

with a bit of practice mate, you'll be fine! Just take your time, use good quality solder, flux and a decent quality iron and you're half way there. Oh yeah...no beers til your finished...lol
