i agree. i think it would be far more economical to have a single transmitting base for all of australia. encrypt regionally, frees up terrestrial based frequencies.....ahh..but who are we

I asked when it would be that other receivers were able to be used for VAST...here is the reply...
Thank you for your email about the selection of Altech UEC to be a supplier of VAST set-top boxes. I apologise for the delay in responding.

Under the contractual arrangement between the VAST service provider (the joint venture company set up by the broadcasters who will be providing the service) and the satellite platform provider, Optus, Altech UEC will initially distribute and market set-top boxes for the VAST service. The selection of a supplier for the set-top boxes is a matter for the broadcasters and Optus. This will ensure that a compliant box is available for the new service in the leading switchover markets. The Government is not a party to the platform management arrangements between the VAST service provider and Optus.

There is no specified minimum period of exclusivity for the set-top boxes under the grant deed entered into between the service provider and Optus. However, a procedure for certifying set-top boxes to operate on the VAST platform must be available to suppliers and manufacturers by 31 March 2011. This will allow for a greater choice of set-top boxes to be available to consumers. The grant deed includes specifications for the set-top boxes. The specifications were published as part of the Minister’s media release on 14 April.

The availability of set-top boxes in the market that are certified under the VAST platform management arrangements will provide a level of quality assurance to consumers in addition to manufacturers’ warranties. We understand that the Altech UEC set-top boxes are being made in South Africa.
I hope that this information will be of assistance to you.

    Kind regards

Anyone want to throw a ball park figure into the ring regarding market availability date of these third party boxes given the hypothetical certification procedure release is the 31 March 2011 ?

Interesting that there is a SCTV central and 10 Central but no 7 central
Isnt SCTV a regional 10 or a Optus 10/7 Combo?

All these numbers are gobbledegook to me, but my eyes lit up when I saw "DVB-S2".
Does this mean that when the system is up and running, all SD and HD channels will be DVB-S2?

7 Central changed their name to SCTV Central in 2008. Aurora still lists the old name, however.

Why are the regional ABC channels still locked out?

All transponders for the VAST service have been DVB-S2 since the service started 5 months ago. There is no point in using inefficient DVB-S as all VAST certified boxes must be DVB-S2 compliant.

Pardon my ignorance - but does DVB-S2 equate to MPEG 4? I notice that the SD services (ABC and SBS) currently available on a VAST box appear to be superior to equivalents on D1.
