Tata Motors unveils cheapest car
Tata Motors has unveiled the world's cheapest motor car at India's biggest car show in the capital Delhi.
The vehicle, called the Tata Nano, will sell for 100,000 rupees or $2,500 (£1,277) and enable those in developing countries to move to four wheels.
The four-door five-seater car, which goes on sale later this year, has a 33bhp, 624cc, engine at the rear.
It has no air conditioning, no electric windows and no power steering, but two deluxe models will be on offer.
Its release comes as India's domestic car market is predicted to soar in the coming years on the back of the country's fast-growing economy and increased consumer wealth.
'People's car'
Indian car sales are predicted to more than quadruple to $145bn by 2016.
Company chairman Ratan Tata said the launch of the Nano was a landmark in the history of transportation.
Tata Motors' engineers and designers gave their all for about four years to realise this goal.

He said the car was "a safe, affordable and all weather transport - a people's car, designed to meet all safety standards and emissions laws and accessible to all".
Environmental critics have said that the car will lead to mounting air and pollution problems on India's already clogged roads.
But Tata said the car had passed emission standards and would average about 50 miles to the gallon, or 20 kilometres to the litre.
The firm also said it would introduce a diesel version of the Nano at a later date.
'Family transport'
At the unveiling ceremony Mr Tata said: "I observed families riding on two-wheelers - the father driving the scooter, his young kid standing in front of him, his wife seated behind him holding a little baby.
"It led me to wonder whether one could conceive of a safe, affordable, all-weather form of transport for such a family.
"Tata Motors' engineers and designers gave their all for about four years to realise this goal.
"Today, we indeed have a People's Car, which is affordable and yet built to meet safety requirements and emission norms, to be fuel efficient and low on emissions."

we will have to wait to see what its like might be good ?
Been there done that
Arghhh. That means petrol prices will go up and up and up as the demand is increased. Someone should invent cheaper petrol too instead of cheaper cars.
Tata also invested in an air powered French car which to be available in a short while for sale the range is around 220Km with full pressure.

Following are some details on the car, which was presented at the Auto Expo in New Delhi.
* Length: 3.1 meters
* Height: 1.6 meters
* Width: 1.5 meters
* Engine: Rear-wheel drive, 2-cylinder, 623 cc(WILD HORSEPOWER BEAST), multi-point fuel-injection petrol engine. Engine is rear mounted. Tata said it was the first time a 2-cylinder gasoline engine was being used in a car with single balancer shaft.
* Safety: Tata said the Nano has an all sheet-metal body, with safety features such as crumple zones, intrusion-resistant doors, seat-belts, strong seats and anchorages, and the rear tailgate glass bonded to the body. Tires are tubeless.

I came across a article on it 2 weeks ago, part of the write up went into how making an affordable car in India would make the roads more gridlocked and polution and oil dependancy worse.
Their traffic and smog is bad enough with just motorbikes.
The rotary version of the air powered engine looks fantastic, extremely clever, dont re-design the wheel just change the way it works, neat!

I would like to see a diesel with a high pressure fuel rail in a small capacity engine like that. Diesel technology has come so far.
I want a red one, then it can be my own indian call centre.
But a review on "top gear'' would be interesting
thing would pop open like a tin of spam if you pranged it. Thankfully there are no plans to export it
mind you, say you put a hyabusa bike engine in it.....................
Here she is
* laughing afterthought - Can you imagine how many people some families will try and stuff in them ?
Hey whats wrong with it?
Some deep dish 20inch rims,
a monster tacho that goes to 15000 rpm
a high flowed T04 turbo,
a massive intercooler that takes up the whole front,
red velour interior,
a fluffy dice,
a nitros sticker
and a dammm big roll cage.
Shit who am i kidding
I like the air intake infront of the back wheel, some Indian designer got abit ambitious........
fit a lot of chooks/bags of rice/kids in that.....
With the rear engine that would have to be the most uncomfortable back seat imaginable, all sheet metal body, hot day...
