Anyone done costings,Council issues,noise etc for generators as against other methods of power generation.Would a 10 KLW do the job for "normal" house usage

So much depends on what you would call normal.
I suggest that you add up the power for all your appliances, Fridge/freezer, washing machine, dish washer, Air conditioner, heaters, sauna, lights, TVs, STBs, PCs, hair blow dryer and whatever else that you could use to make life comfortable. Any motorised circuit has a heavy startup current.
Although you may not have them all going at the same time, it is prudent to allow for that eventuality. Or use separate priortised circuits so that you do not overload at any time.

10kva is quite a large genny and will power the average home with a little to spare. If you're plannin to operate sensitive devices such as pcs, lappys, home theatre, LCD/plasma screens then you'll need am inverter genny. Either way, if you're planning on using such a system as a means of getting off the grid, it's a little cost prohibative.

Unless you are in a rural area no council will allow you to operate a generator 24/7 if grid power is available.
You cant just use a standard generator either you need a regulated inverter type to operate most household appliances.

It will cost around 4.5 times what you pay for normal power to comfortably operate a generator when you take into account price of the generator , fuel and maintenance .
