Default XP hangs on select user screen

MasterRadio's system has no users set and usually boots directly into Windows.
Last night it displayed and hung on the "To begin click on your user name" screen but no users are displayed. It hangs there until rebooted and does the same again.
It will not boot to "Last known good config" or safe mode. The same thing happens. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Corrupted user profile maybe? Have you tried booting in safe mode at all?

Have you left if running for a while to see if it goes any further..

It might be a job for the xp disc and the windows recovery feature.

Put the harddrive into another computer if you can as a secondary drive and backup any of the files you need to keep incase something goes wrong in recovery.

Thanks for that but I'm stuck in no man's land I have already tried the ram swap but no joy .. can't get to safe mode because it's mid install when it crashes.... no new hardware has been added .... doesn't look good.

Can you stick the drive into another box and do a scandisk or chkdisk on the drive.

The drive is only a month or so old .... can take it out and put it into my box as a second ... save all his music at the same time but no time for a couple days ...and he's impatient to get it back ... oh well he will just have to wait if he wants his chit

One more thing you could try in recovery is CHKDSK.

Hey MrRadio, Was the old harddrive you took out still working and if so has it still got the OS on it so you coud maybe drop it in and make sure it's not a board fault etc.

Nah old drive not returned by tech when new one installed. The thing has deteriorated .... won't run long enough for repair install .. last try crashed at about 99% done ... then it has a corrupt config file, I have had it to two techs today the first, a friend diagnosed dud main board, PSU ok Ram ok ... on to second, then one whose going to do it under warranty, and the bloody thing performed flawlessly ... we tried to crash it for about an hour but nothing. So back home saved all his precious music and pics to USB drive with Hirens and currently formatting.
If it doesn't last long enough to do clean install then back to warranty tech for new bits on the house.

Maybe get a copy of memtest as an iso and do a ram test. Have a bit of a read in the website below.
