I think the extended warranty is the best thing anyone can do these days. Especially with parts avaiability being a problem for some brands.

Anyone else decided to take advantage of our strong dollar to do some updating or adding to the collection ? Retailers seem keen to cut a good deal at the moment.I just bought an LG 60 inch 1920x1080 HD Plasma for $2200 including delivery ( an hour round trip for them ) and 5 years warranty.
There are some really nice LCD and LED Tv's out there at the moment, I bought the plasma for its size and it going in rumpus/games room otherwise it would have been LCD/LED as the picture quality is superior ( in my opinion of course ). But with Plasma heading towards the end of its life span, there are some great deals on them and they are much improved over earlier versions which would almost heat your house.
It was also interesting to see that some of the LED's have such a high energy rating that they need multiple " star rating " stickers which has to be a good thing with power prices going up. Even the 60 inch Plasma I bought had a 4 star rating.

Mick, re extended warranty - yes thats what I am thinking. Hopefully it blows up in 5 years and plasmas are no longer around and they give me a LED instead
Almost every major chain of retailer is now seeming to stock 70-80 Samsung and LG, in reality there isnt really a big choice apart from them other than the odd Panasonic and the really cheapies like Hisense and Soniq.
This would depend on your outlook reagrding the value of extended warrranty, as IMO starting to think modern televisions are disposal items once thay crap themselves, compared to older technology.
Our family purchased a cheaper but satisfactory LCD a couple of years back - and didn't think twice regarding extra cost of an extended warranty - as now it would cost less than half the original purchase price to replace! I would not hesitate to purchase new rather than geting it fixed, although talking about less than $1k to replace with like!

just one minor issue with these warranties is the cost of freight to and from a repairer.
Some have an 'In Home' service which needs to be clarified regarding your location.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!
Most warranties on Tv's over a certain size are in home or picked up from your home due to the size and weight of them.
