yeah you should watch em spin their web its awesome and when they are in a ball shaped stance and then woooooo there long leads just come at ya

Reassessed the spider type to a "Garden Orb Spider" because it is Australian, the red femured orb spider is American see

Orb Spider venom is almost harmless or at most to cause a weak local reaction.

"Venom toxicity - the bite of Orb-Weaving Spiders is of low risk (not toxic) to humans. They are a non-aggressive group of spiders. Seldom bite. Be careful not to walk into their webs at night - the fright of this spider crawling over one's face can be terrifying and may cause a heart attack, particularly to the susceptible over 40 year olds."

Orb weavers are pretty much "good" spiders. Golden orb spiders produce the strongest known silk, several times as strong as kevlar. They make good outdoor pets, you probably should not try to handle it, just say hello and admire it. Entertain it with a shoulder shimmy.

Against the feelings of most people I quite like spiders.
Not because we have a few dangerous ones but mostly because I think these little critters do a lot of good for us.
I hate flies and mozzies - imagine how many of them we would have without our 8-legged friends.
During a night fishing trip on the Yarra I had the chance to watch one of these small orb spider built a new web.
At first I was wondering why there is such a long single line on a bush until I realised it is no fishing line but in fact from the spider climbing up on it....
Extreme strong and elastic stuff!
I lost track of the spider a few times but quite soon there was a basic framework for the web already in the bushes and it was huge!!
The speed during the final stages of putting down the sticky lines across the frame was amasing.
There was not much fish around so I should have gone home but I waited until the spider was finnished and put a big moth on the web that I cought on my camping lantern.
After all that hard work it was time for a treat

Mind you all the fun about that nice spider was gone minutes later when I got covered in several of them on the way back to my car.
They might look good in the morning fog, but trust me if I say they are a pain to get off your face and hair ROFL

Yep....hop into bed late at night, hear something bubbling away out the back, realise pool filter has been left on.
Pool filter strategically placed in furtherest, darkest corner of back yard. Under the trees where the spiders live....
Every time I get up to turn it off I swear it won't happen again....
