Last time I looked Windows and XBOX games use things like
Microsoft Visual Studio .NET and CodeWarrior, these are both very popular

But all depends on the platform you want to start with.
When you do things right, people won't be sure that you have done anything at all

maybe try "Multimedia Fusion 2 Developer"

Clickteam's latest application is Multimedia Fusion 2 (MMF2), which was released worldwide on June 30, 2006. The title is the successor to Multimedia Fusion, the company's most popular software application. The MMF series is an easy-to-use yet powerful drag-and-drop game and application creator for non-programmers and programmers alike.

If you want to make games Like "first person shooters" etc. Have a look at FPS creator. It's basically a click and drag system but also gives you the ability to write code to suit your specific needs.

If you feed ducks at a pond, chances are your bound to feed a goose or two without even knowing it.

    LOL Mick.

Yeah the Mods deleted the entire post... was not sure how they would handle it.... had to laugh as it contain a link to some, ummmm, well best to not mention it. twas sitting there for a few months.....I washed my eyes out!

basically was a blurb on PHP (hey, do people still google PHP) with a link in sig.

edit: to answer the question, was a great debate in another forum (hence how I stumbled on this - thinking it may have been the same person asking), re: best language, was really an interesting read from some HARDCORE (knowledgeable) programmers!

I guess C++ is traditionally the language of choice for game development, but as a beginner , perhaps look at python (I love it), VB, to get the concepts of programming.... c++ is powerful, but you have to control everything from scratch (I struggled as it was a language I learned after a few others!)
I am crap at programming, and do not recommend my limited knowledge. this is just an opinion, take it with a grain of salt.
