"Telstra is working towards the deadline of 28 April to turn off the CDMA network and consumers should act on the basis that it will be switched off," Senator Conroy said yesterday in a statement. "This is subject to me a receiving a report that comprehensively addresses my concerns."

Date has been confirmed, 28 April 2008

TELSTRA will shut the CDMA mobile network within a fortnight despite fears regional customers will be denied adequate phone coverage.

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy confirmed today at a 11:30 press conference in Sydney that that Telstra has met the requirements to allow closure of its CDMA mobile phone network from 28 April 2008.

The 10-year-old CDMA network, which at one point served almost two million mainly regional users, has long been slated for closure, but the government forced Telstra to keep it open for an extra three months amid fears users would be disadvantaged.

“I am satisfied that Telstra has met the equivalence tests in its licence condition and has sufficiently rectified the problems I identified in January, including handheld handset coverage, customer information provision and the availability of equipment and services,” Senator Conroy said today.

So does that mean that any old or new CDMA handsets will become a useless item?
If so.... then there is going to be a lot of wasted handsets.
I wonder if some company is stuck with a back log of them in thier wharehouse?
Does anyone know when they were last on sale? or if there is any use for the old handsets (in a hobbist way i mean)?
Or do they go the way of the analog handset... a recycle bin job
